Getting to know YOU

Hi all, I have been married for 46 years. I grew up on a farm in Iowa, but have lived in Colorado since 1965. My grandmother raised rat terriers, so we had one of her puppies, named Bing. Not sure how she got that name...Crosby? I'll ask Mom, who still lives on the farm where I grew up. We got our first Cairn, a mix, but she definitely looked like a Cairn, after our Cocker died. Mindy stole my heart, so after she died, I vowed to not go through losing another one. Two years later, our son, who was still living at home, while working on his college degree, decided it was *time* for another dog. He was determined, so I became invovled and found a breeder in Loveland. I fell for a little dark brindle female and named her Lindy. When the family went to see the new puppy, our daughter wanted one, also, and chose Lindy's littermate, Carolina. Beings she worked and I didn't, I offered to take Carolina during the day. I loved every minute of having two around.

My hobbies are reading, mostly ancient history novels, but I'll not pass up any good book someone recommends. My husband and I love to cruise and have been to countless places around the world.

I also enjoy gardening and scrapbooking. We lost our beloved Cairn, Lindy, 10 days ago. I'm not dealing with her death very well, but the pain is not so bad as the first week. One week after she died, I had finished reading a book and noticed one on the night table, under a book I had already read. When I pulled it out, it was one Lindy had chewed the binding off, when she was a puppy!! It was covered with teeth marks, the binding and cover were in shreds. Beings I am now in what has been mislabeled as the "Golden" years, I probably got it out to re-read earlier this summer, spring and "forgot" it was there. It was a sweet reminder of my beloved Lindy and her "chewing' year. I am not ready to get another dog quite yet, but when I do, it will be another Cairn. Dogs don't grow up and leave home, but they do eventually leave and when they do, they take a part of my heart and soul and leave countless happy memories.

I love this site. Thanks for sharing, everyone!!

Nancy, I'm so sorry to hear about Lindy. How nice that she left you a reminder of her puppydom! I hope the funny tales and adorable pictures of Cairns on this site go a little way into brightening your day.

Hello i have already posted some of this, but i thought id introduce myself. Married almost 20 years to a wonderful guy, we have 4 kids ages 17,14,13 and 5. We had a golden retriever named rusty who died on 6/25/11 at 16 years old and we currently have a chocolate lab who is 13.5 years old and not doing very well. We decided we wanted a smaller dog for our next pet, and we were thinking he might help to cheer our lab up. After a bunch of research we decided on a Cairn Terrier. We found a good breeder, went and picked out a puppy and have been visiting our little Boy Scooter every week, and we get to take him home this week!! We pick him up friday November 2nd and we cant wait!! Ive been doing alot of reading on this forum, and boning up on my Alpha dog skills :) Cant wait to get to know everyone!!

SS

One awesome husband plus, 4 kids, 2 fur babies (also known as dogs!) 2 turtles and one cat = one wonderful life!!

Hi everyone. :)

My name is Kelly. I'm a 30ish year old mother to four + two fur babies. My husband and I have been married for 12+ years and both grew up in the same small farming community. We have two older daughters and younger twin boys.

We both work full time and have a full time stay at home au pair that assists the family with the kids and housework. I work as a senior financial analyst in the medical field and am currently a student in a Heathcare MBA program. My husband is living his dream working on restoring cars and is hoping to transition to a technical teaching career at a local college within the year. We've had more cars than I can count! & every metal surface in the vicinity of our home has been a practice area for flames or pinstriping.

In my off time (ha ha) I enjoy knitting and cooking. I love the outdoors and am involved in several local hiking groups. I really LOVE photography, whether its film or digital, outside or in.

Looking forward to getting to know you all and sharing a common interest. :)

I found this site through my daughter, Carolinasmom.  It is great to connect with other Cairn families and read about all the Cairn antics, I am so familiar with.  My DH and I have owned Cairns for over 30 years.  What else can I say about that. ha

Our beloved Lindy, who was Carolina's litter mate, died last September/2012.  Carolina had died the previous November/2011.  Both Marsha and I made it around two months before each getting another Cairn.  Oh how they steal your hearts!! Ellie was a puppy, but Brinna is a 7 year old retired show girl.  She is trained so well and had this beautiful coat, which I am working diligently on learning how to groom her.  Linda, who raised her from a puppy,  has been gracious to give me grooming lessons, in spite of her busy schedule with her husband, Ray, who travel all over the country showing their beautiful Cairns.

Now about me, I was born in 1945..yikes, time flies when we are having fun!!  I  grew up on a farm in Iowa and when I was about 2 years old, I squeezed two baby goslings into the next world..is that called loving them to death??  I soon learned to not squeeze so hard and grew up loving every animal I came in contact with, especially horses and dogs, oh yes and the dozen or so farm cats.

The hen house rooster and the gander used to scare the daylights out of me, so I assume my reputation with the baby goslings got around.

I was a stay at home mom and a volunteer at the schools my children attended, then I became a professional college student and finally graduated in 2003, after 18 plus years of taking college classes.  I love to travel, enjoy the grandchildren, spoil my Cairn, love to read historical fiction books and return to my roots and visit my 93 year old mother who still lives on the family farm and manages two farms, plays bridge, drives...She's a young 93 year old.

I'm sure no one read this to the end..lol, but I do love this forum!!!

I'm a Brit living in Canada who inherited a cairn terrier called Hamish 8 years ago, when he was 8, and sadly had to say goodbye to him on New Year's Day 2013. Hamish went everywhere with us and was quite the traveller - he toured most of England (including Haltwhistle & Hadrians Wall which I saw mentioned earlier) and Scotland with us, then moved to North America where he visited 4 Canadian provinces and 25 US states, plus NYC, Chicago, Boston, DC, and Detroit. Hamish was crème, so the majority of people would admire our lovely little westie and we would have to explain what a cairn was (using the Toto example).

After losing Hamish we said that we wouldn't get another dog for a few years, however in June we brought 10 week old Henry home - our first cairn terrier puppy!!! It's a steep learning curve and for every step forward we take at least two back, but we know we'll get there in the end. We've been socialising him at a few local car shows and interestingly a few people have recognised him as a cairn, but we did have one comment about the large yorkie!

Idaho Cairns

They do look like Yorkies when they are young!  Welcome, we have several members going thru "Cairn Puppy Taming" at the moment, I am sure you can commiserate lots of frustration with them.  Always have to keep Hamish in mind, aiming at the goal of having another great Cairn, one size fits all, big, big dog in a little body experience.  Welcome

Hi. My name is B. My partner and I live in a large city in Texas. We adopted Callie Rue on June 1, 2013. I haven't figured out how to attach a photo to a post (my media doesn't seem to work, and image asks you to go to a link), so her photo is my profile photo. Yesterday was the first time she was groomed. She is about 8 lbs. and is around 10 months old. I am going to train her to become a therapy dog because she is extremely friendly and gentle to strangers and is great with my grandma who is on hospice. Chewing is her thing right now. Once we get that under control, I will be more relaxed. She has learned to use the puppy pads in between her walks. She CAN hold it all night, sometimes doesn't. Since she is crated while I work, I don't want to crate her at night because she hates it and I want her with me in bed at night. I was walking her at 2 a.m. and it is not safe here in the city at that time to walk her by myself, so I am thrilled that she figured out the puppy pads!!! Nice to "meet" everyone here!

Greetings to all:

My name is Cheryl.  I have been married for 30 years and I have 3 children and two grandbabies.  I am from Ohio.

I lost my Carin Maya on July 10, 2013.  We rescued her when she was 9 years old. She would have been 13 years old on September 23, 2013 had she lived.  We miss her so very much.

We have a 11.5 week old female Carin puppy named Islay (pronounced Eye-la).  Right now she is a Black Brindle, but we know that can change dramatically.  We also have a male Giant Alaskan Malamute named Tiki.

I look forward to many discussions.  BTW, I love reading about all of your Carins and viewing their gorgious pictures.   :D

Here is a picture of my little girl Islay. After this picture was taken one of her ears is up and the other is almost up completely.

Love the name "Islay"! There was a recent discussion of using Scottish place names for our dogies names. My next cairn will be Talisker.

Two new Cairns--welcome Teddy Bear and Islay to the forum--that welcome also includes the masters as well.  It's neat to have you on board.

I've been on the forum for a year and a half and my name is Charlie. . My fiancé, Suzanne and I have been together about 3 years and are planning to be married in May 2014. We're both in our 50's and we adopted Mac who'll be two in January, in April 2012. It's the 2nd marriage for both of us.

We're planning on adding one of Mac's litter mates to our family as she's just become available from their breeder...Her name is Maddie. If all goes well, we may be able to have her by thanksgiving :)

This is a wonderful place and the knowledge and advice is priceless. Thanks to you all.

Hello everybody, my name is Kelsey. I love foreign languages and am currently studying to become a professional French to English translator. I also enjoy playing my 3DS in my spare time. I seem to be one of the younger ones here at only 19 years old. I have two pets currently. Chia, who is my (part) cairn terrier, and Cosmo, my cat.

Here is Chia below. She is only part Cairn terrier (and part Yorkie we suspect.) The resemblance is quite striking, no?

Hello everyone,

My name Is Jessica, I am Pippa Twickenham's devouted human slave (Aka: Hooman). I am currently 20 years old, and I do still live at home but I also have several serious health problems one of which is a degenerative nerve disease that I get treatments for. I live with my Mom as an only child of a divorce. I am in college to become a teacher, currently deciding what kind of teacher but I have narrowed it down some. I love all dogs, I volunteer with shelter dogs. Along with Cairns, I also love Doberman Pinschers.

Anyway-- Pippa is 9 years old-- he is a MANLY MAN! Sometimes people think Pip is a girl and we have to firmly correct them and say "actually Pippa is a burly MAN". I love Pippa more than anything in the world, he is my little man. We adore how intelligent he is, and we also adore how he never howls or is yappy. I noticed some cairns seem to howl and get yappy, yet Pip uses a big boy bark and at times can sound gruff and much bigger than he really is. Pippa is just the perfect dog for us.

We live in St.Louis, MO and would love to start a Carin Park/Play/Walk group for the area if anyone is interested.

Also, the reason I joined was to find out more information about Pippa's sire, and breeder in general... I dont know if that is acceptable but I was really curious when I couldn't find anything online. Maybe someone knows?

Thank You!

Jessica, we welcome you and Pip to the Forum!  Thanks for introducing yourself.  Can't help much with Pip's heritage of course but my youngest Cairn is a Missouri dog--born in Strafford on the western side of the State and she's a great little terrier so I am quite fond of those "Show Me" Cairn Terriers.

Welcome Jessica and Pip!  I'm originally from the St. Louis area (actually Southern Illinois) and miss it terribly.  Wish I could move back and join your Cairn group.

Got any pictures of Pip you can share?  Buffy is always looking for more pics of handsome boy Cairns to hang inside her crate. :P

Hello and welcome to all new Cairn Talkers :)

For conducting pedigree research, the online Cairn pedigree database  is approaching 50,000 Cairns listed (worldwide) so if Pip came from a breeder involved in the breed in an organized way, you may be able to track ancestors from his pedigree.

www.cairn.dk/ped

Discussing sources of our own dogs is a bit of a tightrope walk from the rules perspective: anything that could be read as an endorsement of any particular breeder is forbidden, but simple statements of fact normally present no problem.

I generally take the approach that the dog's registered name is  fair game and no one will get in trouble for simply providing the full name of any dog.  Reputable kennels and crummy dog brokers alike can put their kennel names on dogs, so while knowing a registered or kennel name is helpful for research, it's definitely not an endorsement.

All that said, if people want to recommend (or warn against) specific breeders via PMs, that's off the public forum and the right way to do it.
