Getting to know YOU

Hi everyone. I'm glad I found this community and thankful to have been given the chance to join up. I was looking for a dedicated thread in which new members could introduce themselves, to no avail (perhaps I just missed it...), so I decided to start my own in order to introduce myself.  I live in the north of Spain and have a Cairn puppy on the way. She is 6 weeks old by now, so she's still with her mum, and provided that everything goes according to plan we'll get her home by the end of this month. Her name will be "Pepa" and she will be a gift for my mother, who lost "Lola", her Westie, to a breast and lung cancer on the 9th of July, on the verge of becoming 12 years old.

We are a family of terrier lovers and have owned several since over 20 years ago. Those include two American Staffordshire Terriers (a male and a female, both gone), a Staffordshire Bull Terrier, Mum's Westie and a Yorkshire Terrier. All females, with the sole exception of the first AmStaff. Lola was an exceptional bitch in all senses, but had some health issues typical of white coated breeds. We wanted to avoid that for the future, and given that Lola was so beautifully tempered, a Cairn appeared like the most sensible choice.

This breed is not terribly popular over here, and that is something that doesn't bother me at all. Westies are, on the other hand, so I presume I'll have to answer questions about Pepa more or less regularly. I live in a town of 300,000 souls and have seen four Cairns, that I can recall.

So that's pretty much it, about myself. Now I have some information to read about the specifics of this breed and, of course, about trimming and stripping :D .

 Best!.

Welcome!

I'll merge your topic into the Getting To Know You topic.  Left from the days before we had an actual gallery or blogs we also have a Member Gallery subforum where each member can have a personalized topic under their own username for photo updates of Pepa and family.  You are of course encouraged to use the actual gallery too! As @Terrier lover says, we love pics :P

Welcome to the forum!  How neat--from Northern Spain, no less--I spent some time in your beautiful country many, many decades ago but memory of the wonderful landscapes and even more wonderful people persists as a favorite time in my life.
With your terrier experience a Cairn should be an absolute joy for you.  They are great little dogs who don't take up a great deal of space but just fill up your dog enjoyment psyche to the max.  Plenty of challenge but easy to manage.
Please do keep us all informed about your experience with your new pup, we will be pleased to see if our experiences match.
Welcome aboard!!!!

Sorry for that. I mistook this thread for one in which members spoke about themselves, not as one also meant to introduce oneself on arrival. I didn't want to increase the mod's workload, just landed...

Thanks all for the warm welcome, and for your kind words to my country . I've never been to the other side of the Pond, but had good American and Canadian workmates in the past. I keep in touch with most of them.

I'm glad you liked it over here. I live in the province of Asturias, in the Cantabric coast. The landscapes are quite different from the rest of the country's... and so is the weather. In fact, someone stole our summer this year, not much of sunlight over here lately :(

As you say, we have some experience with terriers and we are well aware that there are challenges ahead for all of us, and that includes Bimba, my Yorkshire Terrier. But, well, Lola (the now gone Westie) was a bit of a pain for Urka (my much loved AmStaff) and Urka herself made the cat's (yeah, we also had a cat) life a nightmare every once in a while. In all cases we had to intervene and "moderate" that, and to deal with tendencies to chew on shoes or to chew on people's noses whenever they got into bite range (that was the Yorkie) :D . Several noses were tagged and during some time we had to advice people to avoid getting too close.

We have some pictures of Pepa already and even a short vid with her siblings and parents. She's the smallest of the litter, but turns out she's the most lively and active, chasing and playing with her mum all the time.

She will have her own thread in the Member Gallery soon, but before that I have some useful threads that I have to read thoroughly in order to get acquainted with the breed.

 Thanks again! ;)

I am soooo glad I found this site!  I got my Cairn Terrier, Peanut, a little over a month ago, and she's now almost 5 months old.  We have a 2-year-old Black Labrador named Chunk, and these two have been best friends pretty much from day one.  Peanut copies everything Chunk does, so I'm hoping that this will help with housebreaking.  Peanut has helped Chunk be a better dog, too -  he doesn't stand outside barking for no reason because he has a friend now. 🐾💕
