Add me to list that jumped on here to check on Barney.

I went to sleep last night praying for your family.

I am glad that he is showing some signs of improvement.

Here is to hoping he'll be going after that cat again real soon!

Be well and know that we all care!

I just saw this topic and hope to hear wonderful news this morning. It is so hard to be worried about them like this and not have any answers. It sounds like you have a wonderful vet so I am sure that he is in good hands. Please keep us posted on his progress and know that we are praying hard for both you and him.

We give dogs time we can spare, space we can spare and love we can spare. And in return, dogs give us their all. It's the best deal man has ever made.

OMG - I just logged on and saw this post. I have read through all the posts just praying that there was a happy ending...

What a horrible/scarey experience you are having with little Barney. You can add me to the list of those praying for a full recovery.

Barney's Mom,

I am praying for Barney and you.

Perhaps you can visit Barney; a visit from you may make him better.

A while ago a friend told me her dog was recovering from surgery. He had been lethargic even before that and no one at the hospital had seen him animated until she went to see him. They couldn't believe the change in him after she put her fingers in the cage and spoke to him.

Barney's been on my mind and in my prayers all night, and I had to see how he was doing this morning. I am so happy to read that he was doing better last night and that his pupils were back to normal (good sign). Ask your vet what anesthetic protical was used on Barney. This may have caused him to have an adverse reation, and you want to make sure it's never used again on him. Carins commonly have liver problems which would cause an inablilty to metabolize the anesthetic, so have his liver checked. Also, due to his heart stopping, request a cardiac work up including an echo cardiogram and EKG on Barney. Barney will be in my thoughts and prayers today.

Well, got a phone call from the vet and there is good news and bad news. I will give you all the good news first. That is, he is up and walking around. He did well through the night at the emergency clinic. Now the bad news. Right now, he is blind. He cannot see things in front of him. This is due to the lack of oxygen to his brain when his heart stopped. The vet thinks his sight will probably return in a couple of days, but there is a chance that it won't. There is one little ray of hope here though. I think I mentioned in a previous post that after his surgery his pupils were dialated and weren't constricting. As of last night, his pupils were back to normal, opening and closing, which I believe is an indication that light is being sensed and the brain is responding to it. I saw a program on Animal Planet about a lady who didn't feed her cats the proper diet and they were all blind. They all had hugely dialated pupils because there was no stimuli to the brain from the blindness. So I am praying, and everyone else keep praying too, that his sight will return and he will be restored and back to himself again.

I cried all night off and on last night. I kept waking up and crying then falling back to sleep again. My husband did all his crying in the shower he said, and my daughter is being like the Rock of Gibraltar. She goes in her bedroom, gets down on her knees and says her prayers, sleeps like a rock all night, wakes up and assures me everything is going to be OK. I wish I had her childlike faith. She refuses to let herself cry about it and gets upset when I start getting hysterical, which I totally was yesterday.

After I hung up the phone, I just started crying thinking of how Barney had just discovered fireflies and liked to jump at them and try to eat them. Oh God, I pray he will be able to do that again.....

Barney's mom,

I'm so glad that Barney is still with us. Chris and I went to bed last night with your little guy on our minds. I'm glad Barney is pushing on. That's wonderful news. I'm so glad you're keeping hope about his eye sight. He'll see again and it's excellent news that his pupils are responding. I am so sorry you and your family are going through this. And if the vet thinks that it's a strong possiblity that his eye sight will return in a couple of days I'm sure it will. Your daughters prayers will pay off - children always have a beautiful way of being gently heard. Hang in there, please keep us posted as you can see we all have a special spot in our hearts for your Barney.

Dear Barneys Mom:

All our thoughts and prayers are with you.

Good...his pupils are back to normal. A very good sign, it may take a few days but I do believe that he will be okay. Your guy will be okay!

If his sight does not recover all is not lost either. My sister has Pemborke Welsh Corgis, three of them, one of which is completely blind. Watching her dogs romp in the yard you would never know that Scoutie has no sight. It does take some special handling and extra attention. But she leads a happy, healthy active life and brings much joy to everyone who knows her.

Comforting hugs and warm wishes to you, your family and dear dear Barney.

Raise your expectations for what your Cairn can do....and try very hard to meet your Cairn's expectations of you.

Our continued prayers. I sit here with tears rolling down my face. My husband and I are now concerned about getting Digger neutered. I sure would like to know what the vet thinks may have cause such a reaction.

I'll be checking back frequently for updates. Please let us know of his condition regularly!

Oh how my heart goes out to you guys....

Little Barney overcame his first big hurdle and that is a huge plus. From what you said I'm sure his eyesight will return to normal.

Your vet sounds like a wonderful, compassionate person...I'm sure her caring helped you through this.

Please keep us updated on his progress and I'll continue to pray, hold good thoughts. Take care of yourself during this stressful time too.

Thank you everyone for your support and prayers. It is amazing how these little creatures can become such a part of your life in such a short time. We've only had Barney since the beginning of May and he has both his paws completely wrapped around my heart.

We are supposed to call the vet around 10:30 this morning to see if they feel he is ready to come home. Half an hour to go....

Many of you have asked what my vet thinks caused this ordeal. She is truly baffled. They did pre-op blood work and everything was fine. His heart was fine. His vitals and color were perfect throughout the surgery. His heart stopped as he was coming out of the anesthetic. They said he was at the perfect level of sedation during the surgery, i.e. not too deep but not too light either. They have no leads as to why it happened, other than just a very bad reaction to the anesthetic. This leads to a question I keep mulling around in my head during all of this. To what extent do I hold this vet clinic responsible for this? I realize it seems to be something that was out of their control, but what if they are not being truthful? I have no indication that they ARE being untruthful. Quite the contrary, they are telling me everything, hiding nothing, and bending over backwards to care for Barney. Believe it or not, I acted on a post I read on the forum and got VPI Pet Insurance for Barney, unfortunately I did not get the rider for spay/neuter and I could kick myself for that. But I wonder if all this emergency stuff would be covered and not the neuter. Oh, I don't know why I am even thinking about that right now. I just want my baby home, whole, and back to normal. Who cares what it costs. It's just money.

I will do an update this evening and let you all know how Barney is doing. KEEP PRAYING FOR HIS SIGHT TO COME BACK!!

YOU ALL ARE THE BEST!!!! :)

All creatures great and small, the Lord God, He made them all!

You're doing a great job - don't worry about getting the VPI that didn't include the neuturing - you're right it's only money and I've spent literally thousands of dollars to keep some of mine alive and I never regreted a penny to this day. They are family and you'll do anything you can to keep them here. I'm doing the VPI insurance this go round too - I was worried about coverage so I got everything under the sun they offered - let's hope I don't need it. So this will be Barney's last big major thing and VPI will just be there just in case.... he'll totally recover I have faith. I'm so glad your husband visited him last night. I would have done the same thing, sent the stronger one of us. That's super good news that they are considering letting him come home today - and I know what you mean about not completely knowing who's liable for what happened. I've had that happen to me, and you'll never know, you pray that it wasn't due to negligence - and then your gut says they're really trying to help - but then your other voice says are they just covering their butts. But regardless - I know your baby is going to be just fine. And will continue to share our strories of our little pups growing up, their continued discoveries, and cherished beautiful memories. As soon as Barney is home I bet he improves immediately. Love does wonders. You're handling this way better than I would be - I'd be too hysterical to even write - so I know that Barney comes from strong stock! :) Hang in there. Kiss Barney for us as soon as you get your hands on him :)

Barney's Mom, I wouldn't worry about holding anyone responsible right now that might just make you angry and bitter just keep praying that Barney gets past this hurdle, regarding VPI Insurance submit all your bills itemized along with the form they provide signed by your vet and the ER clinic. They might deny the neutering and anesthesia portion, maybe the pre op, but I think they will probably cover the complications, the most that can happen is that they deny it. Besides, didn't your vet say she would take care of the ER clinic? Just keep thinking positive and pray Barney makes a full recovery.

Barney's Mom,

I will continue to pray for all of you. I know that Barney will be fine and he will be back to chasing fireflies in no time at all. From everything that you have said, I truly believe that this was one of those medical incidents that happens that cannot be explained. I know from personal experience that these types of things happen with humans to. A person goes into surgery after a very clean pre-op and something goes wrong either during the surgery or after that baffles the doctors. Your vet sounds like a very honest, caring person and it is very natural to have some of the thoughts that you are having. Barney will continue to be in my prayers and with the power of so much prayer and positive thinking coming your way, he can't help but to bounce back and be as good as new.

Mike
