A gene finding links severe canine juvenile epilepsy to mitochondrial dysfunction

Researchers found a cause for severe epilepsy resulting in death in Parson Russell Terrier puppies at a few months of age. A change in the PITRM1 gene can lead to a dysfunction of mitochondria, the cellular energy pumps. Concurrently, amyloid-beta accumulation and widespread neurodegeneration associated with Alzheimer's disease were identified in the puppies' brains. Changes to the PITRM1 gene in humans also cause a severe but slowly progressing brain disease.http://feeds.feedburner.com/~r/scien

How to Know if Your Dog is Depressed

Unlike humans, dogs can’t verbalize what they are feeling. Can Dogs Have Identical Twins?

Dogs are always born in litters and oftentimes look alike, so it is easy to assume that identical twins aren’t uncommon in puppies. But in reality, identical twins in dogs are incredibly rare. Twins are two offspring produced by the same pregnancy. They can be either identical twins, meaning that they develop from one egg (monozygote), which splits and forms two embryos, or fraternal twins, meaning that they develop from two different eggs (dizygote). In fraternal twins, each twin is fertilized

Shift in diet allowed gray wolves to survive ice-age mass extinction

Gray wolves are among the largest predators to have survived the extinction at the end of the last ice age. A new study analysing teeth and bones shows that the wolves may have survived by adapting their diet over thousands of years --- from a primary reliance on horses during the Pleistocene, to caribou and moose today.http://feeds.feedburner.com/~r/sciencedaily/plants_animals/dogs/~4/UOckykQqSqU View the source article

Dogs act jealously even when they don't see their rival

Dogs are one of humanity's most-beloved animal companions. They share our homes and seem to reciprocate our affections. But could this emotional bond extend into feelings of jealousy? To help answer that question, a team of researchers gauged the reactions of a group of dogs when their owners appeared to shower attention on a perceived rival.http://feeds.feedburner.com/~r/sciencedaily/plants_animals/dogs/~4/J4s4NVt8ttE View the source article

Is It Safe For Dogs to Drink Out Of Communal Water Bowls?

When you’re out and about at a dog park or on an outdoor adventure, it’s convenient to spot a communal water bowl available to hydrate your precious pup. However, communal water bowls come with some hidden risks. Your dog may be lapping up bacteria, viruses, or parasites when they quench their thirst after an outdoor adventure. Obviously, it’s really important to keep your canine companion hydrated — dehydration can lead to heatstroke, a dry nose, vomiting, loss of appetite, and more. But are

Preventing Obesity in Senior Dogs

Alexandra Anastasio also contributed to this article Like the humans who care for them, dogs are not exempt from the battle of the bulge; they, too, struggle with weight gain and the health problems that come along with carrying around extra pounds. “Dogs of all ages can be obese, although the greatest prevalence of obesity occurs in dogs between 5 and12 years old. This condition may result in serious health problems, decrease longevity, and detract from quality of life,” says Dr. Jerry Klein,

Benadryl for Dogs

The temptation to reach into our medicine cabinets to treat our pets can be very dangerous. Humans and dogs react very differently to medications, which is why veterinarians caution dog owners against making independent decisions about how to medicate their animals. However, some human medications are safe for use with dogs, as long as they are used appropriately. Veterinarians use diphenhydramine, commonly known by the brand name Benadryl, for dogs on a regular basis to treat allergies, travel

How to Get Rid of Dog Fleas

Fleas are a nuisance. These tiny, blood-sucking parasites irritate your dog and infest your home — often before you realize that fleas have moved in. Many dogs are allergic to flea bites, which can cause intense scratching, red and flaky skin, scabs, hot spots, and hair loss. Fleas can also cause tapeworm and anemia. 7 Places to Look for Ticks on Your Dog

Ticks are a problem for dogs (and for humans) throughout the United States during all seasons of the year. When temperatures rise, and you and your dog are spending more time outside, these bloodsucking pests become a larger threat. Ticks sit themselves on tall grasses and shrubs, waiting for your dog to walk by, so they can attach themselves to him. Tick prevention should be taken seriously, and not just because these arachnids make many people squeamish — ticks actually carry quite a few dead

Dogs infected with Leishmania parasites smell more attractive to female sand flies

Dogs infected with the Leishmania parasite smell more attractive to female sand flies than males, say researchers. Leishmania parasites are transmitted from infected dogs to people by sand flies when they bite. As only female sand flies transmit the parasite, researchers wanted to understand if infection made dogs more attractive to the insect. Globally over 350 million people are at risk of leishmaniasis, with up to 300,000 new cases annually.http://feeds.feedburner.com/~r/sciencedaily/plants_a
