Now Abbey could use some positive thoughts/prayers

Sorry I didn't update sooner. We made it family night here so we could keep an eye on Abbey. We rented "Eight Below" and watched it w/ the Cairns. Kiara sits next to dh, Abbey was in dd's lap, and Hannah was in mine, w/ the Lab stretched out on the floor. :D

Abbey had a good day. She refused to eat any rice, so dh gave her 1 TBL of cottage cheese which she gobbled up. He continued to use her IV for medication to make sure she kept it down. The cottage cheese stayed down, so after several hrs, she got a little more. Dh ran to the store and came back w/ two new toys for her. I'm sure Kiara and Hannah wouldn't quite understand her getting this royal treatment, so I made sure to sneak Abbey's toys to her while Kiara was in the backroom and Hannah was just roaming the house w/ the cat. If tonight goes well, her IV will come out and she'll start back on real food. I am so glad she didn't have an obstuction. Just seeing her ears up today made me smile. For those of you who said Cairns bounce back, you are so right.

Thanks again for caring. I hope to be able to offer comfort and reassurance to others here when they need it.

Thanks for the update...I'm a worry-wart.

I couldn't help but think what a wonderful family you all are. (your pic in the other post confirms it...lovely ) There is so much love that comes out of your posts not only for your Cairns but your human family too.

That's it.....I'm going to nag my 19 year old into becoming a veterinarian. It's too late to have hubby switch jobs but it must be so comforting to have a loved one in that field.

God Bless you guys and give Abbey a hug and a kiss (right on the lips) from me.

So glad she's better....Yeah, Abbey and a  to you all too.

Thanks Kay for such a thoughtful comment about us. As far as our picture in the other post, those are the few of me dressed up. I actually prefer jeans to dressing up. I should post the picture of us after a 2 hr hike in the N.C. mountains all covered w/ sweat. You might not think us to be lovely. :D I haven't even posted that we went to N.C. because Abbey got sick right after we got home. I just fed her a small amount of Canidae mixed w/ cottage cheese and am waiting to see that she keeps it down. Someone spit up in the kitchen this morning, and I'm hoping it wasn't Abbey. I tend to think it was Kiara. She sometimes gets a little sick after getting hold of a toad or snake. Yesterday dd yelled she had a snake and I ran after her, but she had already shaken the thing inside out and into 3 pieces.

I'm so happy to hear that Abbey is doing much better. I have been thinking of her so much. It just breaks my heart to have one of our "family" here not feeling well. Continued get well wishes and thoughts coming Abbey's way.

I'm happy to hear that Abbey is doing much better! Finch had some green loose stools this afternoon. :( I gave her some plain rice for her meal. She thought she was in heaven...lol! I gave her about a cup of fluffy rice and I'm hoping that is enough. Poor babies....I just wish they wouldn't eat all the crud they find in the ground!

So glad things seem to be getting brighter for your little girl. I hope Abbey keeps feeling better each day.

Did you go to the NC mountains? I was in the Cashiers/Highlands area of the western NC mountains a couple of years ago in the summer, and it felt like heaven after Arizona!

It looks like Abbey is almost back to normal. She kept her Canidae and rice mix down, so I gave her a little more a few hrs later and she did fine w/ that too. BUT, :( today little Hannah started showing the same signs Abbey did when she was breaking w/ gastroentercolitus. She vomited yesterday, but I thought it was because I gave her too cold of water from the refridgerator, but now I'm thinking it must have been her that spit up this morning. The sure sign was her not wanting her dinner today and then refusing a Bil-Jac treat or baby carrot, two of her favorites. Dh was doing relief work so he had me bring Hannah in and he hooked her up to an IV and gave her some fluids. He said she's definitely breaking w/ it and we can't totally prevent it, but we can start her on fluids now so when she does start vomiting, she won't get dehydrated like Abbey did. He left a catheder in her leg so it's easier to administer medication. Abbey lost 2 lbs, down to 13 lbs right now. Hannah's already small at 12 1/2 lbs and really doesn't need to lose more. If Abbey had her way, I think she'd like to gain all her weight back in one day. She has wanted food all day.

Stay positive for Hannah. I feel much better about her being I knew what to look for and dh has already begun treatment on her. I'll update you and hope I'm not going to have a long night w/ her.

:offtopic: I LOVE North Carolina! Yes we go up there when we can. I even have dh falling more in love w/ the state. We just returned from Maggie Valley, which is by Cherokee. We did quite a bit of hiking in the Smokey's and Chimney Rock. We never once had to use air conditioning. I've been to Franklin and the Highlands which are also beautiful. I just never got a chance to post about it being Abbey got so sick after we picked her up. We took our Lab, Thor and Hannah. Kiara lost her chance to go after running off from us once. We just couldn't take that chance w/ her, so we left her at this doggie hotel we've used several times. We left Abbey w/ her being those two are so close and sleep together at night. We think that's where Abbey picked up gastroentercolitus and brought it home and gave it to Hannah. Kiara seems to be such a die hard and doesn't seem to be showing any signs of slowing down. She was quite vocal when I left her, which always hurts. As soon as I picked her up and carried her out to the van, her eyes were everywhere but me. She already had that look of "hunt". I'm keeping an eye on her, but don't expect her to break w/ this.

Hi Beth:

Glad to hear that Abbey is doing better, but now i'm feeling concern for Hannah.

I didn't realize that I dog could pick up such a nastly bug like this.... I would have always assumed that it was something ingested rather than a virus. I recall last winter news stories about a dog flu, I'm sure that your Darling Hubbster has already thought of this, i'm just thinking out loud.

Well, keeping postive thoughts for all the four legged ones in your home- and let's home that none of the 2 legged ones can catch this...

Gastroentercolitus can be viral, bacterial, or caused by toxins and has nothing to do w/ canine influenza. Humans cannot catch this. Hannah is sleeping right now and will be watched throughout the night. Thanks for your positive thoughts.

Wow, Beth, I don't know how I missed this thread! I can't believe what you and Abby have been through. I know how worried you must have been. I'm so very glad to hear that Abby is doing better and that you caught Hannah's symptoms early. Take care of yourself while you're caring for your babies!

Thanks everyone, we've used this place for years to board our pets. We love it because it has that warm, cozy feeling. It's expensive, but the dogs each have a large air-conditioned indoor area including a plush bed, and a doggie door that opens to their own private fenced area. This time, when I dropped my dogs off, I noticed way more dogs than usual and my dh thinks Abbey caught it there. Stress can cause the immune system to weaken, and Abbey may have stressed more than Kiara, even tho they were together. We also left our 9 yr old Aussie there, but he hasn't shown any symtoms. At his age, it would be much harder on him. I guess I'm going to really have to look into and invest in a good pet sitter next time.

Abbey is doing great tonight and Hannah is still sleeping. Just taking her to the animal hosp. and seeing her little face staring at me as if to ask "why" can be so upsetting. I let the techs put her catheder in so that she wouldn't hold it against me. Dh said I could leave her while the IV fluids dripped in, but there was no way I could. I can't even describe her look starring directly into my eyes, making sure not to break eye contact. After watching "Eight Below" last night and seeing those dogs left behind, the look those dogs gave their owner as he left was all too fresh in my mind. I couldn't leave Hannah for even an hr. I held her while the IV was attached until I could bring her home. I just can't believe the power in a Cairn's eyes. When they really want something, like Hannah wanted me, they will stare right through you and speak to your heart.

I pleased to hear that Abbey is doing much better. Poor Hannah, I hope she doesn't get as sick as Abbey was, at least you've got in early so hopefully she won't.

Sending more positive thoughts your way.

Knowing what to look for w/ Hannah has kept her gastroentercolitus mild. Her stomach isn't digesting as she did vomit once, not all night like Abbey. Dh got the meds in her early. She's very alert and not even close to as sick as Abbey was. Thanks for everyone's thoughts. I think Hannah will continue to improve throughout the day and bounce back fast. You would not believe Abbey was as sick as she was. She is so lively and happy this morning. I'm glad they're a hardy breed.

I'm glad to hear that Hannah and Abbey are on the mend. It's very hard to see our poor babies sick. I know exactly what you mean about the eyes....they seem to reach right to our souls!

So glad that things are going better for your babies!

Those eyes can talk. My babies have told me many things

through those eyes.

I am so happy Hannah is on the mend and Abbey has bounced

back. What a scare for you guys!

Hope things settle down for the fourth!

Be well,

Ellie
