AWESOME pictures everyone. I just love looking at those Cairns :P

Thought I'd add mine to the mix here. Today here in one of our shopping plazas, they are having Santa with pets pictures every Monday until Xmas (rest of the week are normal Santa photos). Took the guys and got an awesome picture..LOL. Price was very reasonable - $12 for a 5 x 7. Then I went to Kinko's and had

them put it on a CD.

I think I can safely say that Shadow is a normal Cairn. He was so traumatized by his physical abuse that it has taken this long to work thru it. Shadow wanted up in Santa's lap in the worst way and purched there ever so happily. Didn't mind the strange costume Santa was wearing nor that it was a MAN... Ashley was a bit leary of getting into the sleigh but once in there was fine.

Just great everyone.

Toomanypaws...how did you get Hannah to keep that hat on? I am totally amazed at the willpower your Cairns have.

Kay, those hats just velcro under the chin. They seem comfortable. Abbey hates elastic bands, but didn't mind this. Here's a picture I took of them last night before bed. I don't think any of them could believe I was calling them in for a photo shoot so late, can't you tell? Both Abbey and Hannah sat down, but Kiara even refused to sit for the pose. I only took 3 pictures before she walked away. :D

A & J.....I just have to know. Where did you get Maggie's coat? We haven't got one for Fergus yet, but the temps are dropping and I think it's time. The poor guy doesn't want to stay outside anymore!

A and J, What a great picture of Maggie! Do you trim her face or strip it? It looks so perfectly "Cairn". Mine look like ragmops! I've got the MKC for the body, but really need something for their face. I've afraid of groomers as Kiara once came home looking like a Schnauzer. I'd love some tips of grooming the face.

Thanks for the great words!!...this is our first cairn, so we try to groom her as best we can, and we learn as we go along... i do follow the tips on this site http://web3.foxinternet.net/cwhall/articles/grooming.htm

We do strip her face, its not easy but i use that dr.scholls foot scrub thing for grip and pull around her face, muzzle, etc. i pinch the hair at the skin really tight so it doesnt pull on her too hard... i did use thinning shears on her chin to shorten it up, i also shear her belly and chest, i strip the top 1/3 of her ears and the inside... i just look at pictures of cairns on this site (from the shows) and the ones that i've seen at shows locally and try to copy the look...

thanks for compliments!! i am inspired by the great pictures and cairns on this site!

p.s. my wife bought the coat at Old Navy

Good for you A and J - you're doing a terrific job, learning as you go, and giving your girl the gift of a healthy coat. I like Curt's grooming page as well and often link to it. It only lacks for pictures, but I also do as you do and look to the show Cairns for inspiration.

[insert plug for the CTCA grooming booklet - it does have illustrations that help a lot]

Anyone who knows me knows that me giving grooming advice is laughable in the extreme. I ruin coat after coat and my dogs are NEVER in good enough coat to show, it seems. I am profoundly lazy to boot. So do as I say, not as I do :P

A fun way to practice is to forget about the whole dog and just spend a day working on one part only. Get a picture of Cairn you like and then say, "Today I'm going to shape ... LEGS!" (Or "the head" or "the tail", etc.)

Another tip I got from an experienced person was to go slowly, and FREQUENTLY step back from the dog and have a look. Don't just tear into the coat and wail away until you think you're done. You'll step back and see naked legs. Trust me on this  Instead, pull a few hairs, comb it nice, step back, have a look, look at your sample picture, look back at your dog and decide which twenty hairs come out next. Lather, rinse, repeat.

I don't fully understand the idea that grooming is only for show Cairns. That's like saying just because I'm not an action-movie-star or model I don't have to launder my clothes, get a haircut, or maybe retire the paisely bell-bottoms in favor of some fashion-forward jeans. Oh wait, I'm *certain* those bell-bottoms will be back in fashion shortly. :w00t: Ok, bad analogy.

Anyway, it's just coat and it grows back. If you aren't showing your dog, no one will be judging its grooming.

  • 2 weeks later...

These are really late holiday pictures, but j I just learned how to use Photobucket. Merry Christmas from Alfie! Uh...he looks a bit serious but these are the only two that came out with his full head. He kept on moving!

Finally got my christmas card done. I was having trouble getting Murph to "stay", so I solved it by slapping him into a sleigh. Worked pretty good, except for one moment when the Collies decided to take off running with Murph holding on for dear life, as they drug him behind them. Lucky for Murph, the Collies didn't get far before they decided he was too heavy to pull. They would not make good sled dogs. :)
