Jake update

Just a quick note. Long story short, my new little guy has parvo. After only having him home 24 hours, I had to leave him at the vet's for IV fluids, antibiotics and monitoring. I have the utmost confidence in my vet, but it was heart wrenching to leave him there. I'm a hospice nurse who is used to all kinds of emotional turmoil, and I was a blubbering idiot in that office today.

Please keep Jake in your thoughts and prayers if you're prone to praying. I know I will be.

On dear - strong thoughts from this quarter. I was just reading about how Tamiflu has promise for much faster treatment of Parvo

Maybe worth asking your vet about it, anyway. Hang in there - folks will be pulling for you and Jake.

Oh, you poor thing. I will not only say a prayer for Jake but for you too. Our Cairns are just so close to our hearts and whenever they get sick, it hits us so hard. I know that helpless feeling of having to leave one at the vets but it's probably the best place for him right now. He will get the care he needs.

Please know that we are all here for you and feel free to share any worries or concerns with us...You are not alone in this.

One of the other "parents" at obedience class this morning was telling how her pup had parvo when she first got her. Just to let you know that this dog has more energy than Booker.

I'll be thinking about you. I've come to the conclusion that there is nothing wrong with crying when it concerns our pets..............jan

Thank you so much for all your concern. Yes, my vet will be giving Tamiflu-we discussed it at length. I've called the breeder and left a message. If she doesn't call me back, then I'll know that she know this was possible. I just want her to be aware her other pups may be at risk. I bought Jake locally from a "backyard breeder" and perhaps that wasn't the best thing, but I fell in love with him when I saw him & there was no turning back.

My vet has promised frequent calls for the rest of the weekend and I can see him any time when the clinic opens during regular business hours.

I'll keep you posted.

Cindy,

Best of luck to you and your puppy. When my son in law got his puppy several years ago, she got parvo too. After a fight, she pulled thru and you would never know anything was ever wrong w/her. She is the healthiest, friendly, spunky dog now.

Keeping everything crossed,

pat.

More positive thoughts and prayers coming from our family. As soon as I read about him not eating and having dry heaves, I was so glad that you had already scheduled an appointment for the vet to see him. You acted fast and he's in good care. Keep us informed.

((((((((hugs)))))))))

Please know how very much Jake and you will be in my prayers. I'm so sorry that you have to go through this.

As far as the tears go, I think you know from your hospice experience how cleansing tears can be.

We are ALL pulling for Jake and he will have plenty of prayers going his way.

Once again, thank you for all you thoughts, prayers, support & ideas. I had no idea I'd have so many people pulling for my little guy & we've never even met face to face.

I spoke with the vet today who said he thought Jake had a good day today. He (Jake, not the vet) has only had one runny stool since I left him there yesterday. The vet started Tamiflu yesterday along with an antiobiotic (I think it's from the amoxicillin family-good for people with stomach bugs) and fluids. My vet sent off a CBC to check his white blood cell count-we should have results of that in the morning. Jake is drinking well, just not hungry. Dr. Middleton says these little guys will be pretty lethargic for a few days until their immune systems kick in then they'll perk up almost over night. I'll be able to see him tomorrow when the clinic is open.

I was talking with a friend today whose beagle/boxer mix had parvo & from the sound of it, was much sicker than Jake. Roxie is now full grown & very healthy, so I have hope!

Thank you all again from the bottom of my heart. It's a testimony to me once again that animal people, especially dog people, are a unique group. I'm honored to be one of you!

Cindy, what good news. It sounds like your little guy is on his way back to good health and continued good prayers will be going out for him.

I was going to shut my computer down for the night but I wanted to come back in one last time to see how things were.

Try to rest up - you've had a horrific day.

Sounds like good news! I can only imagine how anxious you must be for tomorrow to get here so you can go see him. I hope tonight goes by really fast.

I'll keep praying!

Maggie

PS Thanks for the update & let us know how it goes tomorrow.

Here is more prayers coming your way. I am so glad that you took him to the vet when you did. Sounds like YOU may be the reason that he makes it out alright. If you had waited to take him, the outcome may not have been the same. Jake says THANK YOU for being such a good Mommy to him!

Savannah sends You and Jake warm puppy kisses to help you though. Please continue to update us on his progress!

I would definately make sure that I talked to the breeder about the situation! I would continue to call until you can get them on the phone, in person (I don't trust answering machines in situations like this). The breeder needs to inform other people of this and what to be looking for so that they can get their pups to the vet if the signs show up! :!:

We give dogs time we can spare, space we can spare and love we can spare. And in return, dogs give us their all. It's the best deal man has ever made.
