Hello,

Our 6 1/2 year old little girl Cairn, Zoe suddenly has taken very ill.

She developed vomiting over the weekend, and yesterday her abdomen became very distended.

Our vet questioned some type of obstruction initially. She took xrays, labs and started IV fluids, pain meds.

The distention worsened overnight, new xrays ruled out foreign body obsturction.

Our vet does not have an ultrasound. We had to take here to Tufts Vet Hospital her in MA.

Her liver enzymes are very elvevated. They do not suspect foreign body obstruction either.

Many possible diagnoses floating around, not one of them are optimistic.

Our hearts are breaking.

Please say a little prayer for our girl.

Thanks,

Barbara

Just to add, I forgot to log in once again.

The ultrasound cannot be done until tomorrow. They could not give us an exact time. This hospital is very latge here in MA. My vet warned it could be very impersonal. Which makes this even more difficult.

Barbara..

I read your post with a very heavy and sad heart....you sound like you've lost all hope but please don't give up. Tufts is an excellent veterinarian hospital and they may have to appear "distant" or cold but that's because they are professionals and can't get emotionally involved. You and Zoe will be in the best hands possible.

Just remember that there are many advances in veterinarian medicine and you have to keep a positive outlook. Whatever it is that has Zoe down, it started suddenly and you caught it from the beginning....that's good.

I can only imagine your anxiety because I know how I'd be in your shoes but be strong and stay positive.

I will say a very long prayer tonite for you and Zoe...keep us posted.

Stay positive for your Zoe. You'll see that the vets will be able to find what is wrong with her and will take care of it. She will be in my thoughts and prayers as well. Let us know how is Zoe doing.

UPDATE:

First, let me thank all of you for the many thoughts, prayers and good wishes being sent are way. You are so very thoughtful and caring which means so much to us at this very difficult time. I just lost my mother on March 4th so this is even harder than is imaginable.

We have a liver specialist at Tufts Vet Hospital in Grafton, MA.

Zoe is stable but very ill. The liver enzmyes remain very high. Her ascites, fluid in the abdomen persists.

They are giving her Aldactone to hopefully help get rid of some of the fluid.

They have her on antibiotics just in case it is an infectious type process.

IV fluids and morphine for pain control.

She had her liver Biopsy this afternoon. She had some bleeding and a slight drop in blood pressure. But the doctor reassures me she is stable at this point.

She did not hold out much hope for treatment. She said we would talk further after the results of the biopsy come in tomorrow afternoon.

Thanks again for all the support. It means so much to me. Crying all the time, my heart aches so.

Ah, my heart is breaking for you. I know what the doctor said left you with little hope, but remember what your vet told you that this hospital is bigger and a little more impersonal, so dont take it to heart. You are doing everything in your power to get her the best help she can and that along with loving her is all you have control over right now. I know the waiting is awful, but know that we are all pulling for her to be okay and thinking of you too.

Pookiegirl, I am so terribly sorry for the tough time you are going through. I lost my first Cairn three weeks to the day before my dad passed away. I will pray that Zoe will overcome this hard time. She knows how much you love her and that will help tremendously.
