New Puupy

We have a new puupy named Toby, we got him from a breeder. We are crate training him. We leave him in his crate at night, and he does very well. Today was the first day everyone was out of the house to go to work and school and he was put back in his crate for the day.

My question is, is this to much time to keep your dog in his crate?

It seems like a lot of crate time but sometimes it is necessary when they are puppies. Could someone let him out for a quick pee and play during the day? Make sure he has chewies and toys with him. Another idea is that if you have a safe area you can block off like the kitchen or laundry room he would have a bigger area and could have water available while still having a bed or blanket and some papers down if he is paper trained.
