Our local paper ran an ad for 2 male cairns at $350/each.

It's very tempting, but I don't think I could go through another 1st year with a pup...................jan

I don't know anything other than there're 2 males for sale. I'm not going to investigate any further because I may wind up bringing home another baby.....................jan

I know a low price may be tempting, but I'd have to question why these Cairns are selling for half, even a third the price of most Cairn pups. I'd have to go w/ my heart and remind myself of that saying, "You always get what you pay for."

There's an ad in our local paper (Lake of the Ozarks) for Cairns of all colors from $100 - $250. It says they're USDA and MO licensed, but they also have Yorkies, Maltese, Poodles, etc. This same paper had a free Cairn puppy about a month ago. I called to see if it needed to be rescued, but they had already given it away. It had some cloudiness in one eye, so they were giving it away. I wonder if this is the same place... I worry about that puppy. Maybe I'll go check the local humane society list and see if it's there already.

I would worry about the price, I agree with the scotts sounds like a puppy mill, the going price in TN, GA, SC is around $1000 - $ 1200 now. I think in most cases you will pay up front or pay later with health problems. Not always the case but more often then not.

I have called on an add in the newspaper here recently where it was $600 and they said top line show quality so I was currious and I asked lots of question and quickly realized it was a puppy mill, she had several other breeds.

I got Kai-lee from a pet store, the "broker" they get their puppies from is USDA approved and in Missouri. Kai-lee has health issues that we believe are due to irresponsible breeding. We see these ads in the Kansas City paper all the time, it's hard to pass up the price, even worse pass up the puppy, but take it from me, it is heartbreaking to see problems when they arise. If you are really wanting to get a new puppy check the CTCA breeder listing, talk to some of these breeders, e-mail them etc. you will get lots of info and hopefully a healthy puppy. We just got our second Cairn a week ago following this process, I can't tell how different an experience it has been. I paid more for Keegan, but I feel I did everything in my power to deal with someone responsible and reputable and not just out to make a buck. Kai-lee was a little bit less at the petstore, but I do have vet bills to contend with for the rest of her life, she takes daily meds, which aren't expensive, but I'm sure will have some side effects and cause other problems down the road. I know the ads in the paper are even lower than the petstore, but a lot of the "brokers" get their pets from the ads in the paper! There are always rescue groups that you could adopt from, that would be a good thing, and you wouldn't be supporting irresponsible breeding.

We paid $450.00 for each of ours, which arrive today woooo hoooo. We did check on the breeder before purchasing and had pictures sent of the pups and mom. The breeder was great and everything seems fine. They have a Vet appointment tomorrow just to make sure. They are also AKC registered, as well as the parents, and we did get a breeder's contract before sending payment. I'm sure we got a great deal but with all the puppy mills it is still scary buying without actually going to the breeder. Being in Alaska we do not have much of choice. Once the "kids" arrive I will give you all an update.

This most definetly sounds like a puppy mill. I purchased a Cairn several months back for $650, only to find out that the lady was a puppy "broker" as they like to be called. She had Parsons, Bostons, Cairns, Rats, etc. My puppy was diagnosed with parvo the day after we brought her home. She was lost. :(

Our new little boy comes home on Father's Day, and we are paying $1,000, and met the breeder, the other adult dogs, of which some are show dogs. Our baby boy's dad made it to the finals in Best in Breed this last weekend in California. The breeder here in Arizona said that pet quality Cairns should run from $1,000-$1,300 from reputable breeders with a spay/neuter contract.
