Cairn as State dog?

Hagar

Recommended Posts

:)Yesterday on Fox news there was an item on the "Crawler thing" at the bottom of the screen, stating that there is a campaign in Kansas to have the Cairn Terrier made the "Official State Dog" due to the Kansas connection in "The Wizard of Oz".

Sounds good to me, except that if it happens, I'll probably have to kiss Renny's ID tag to get him to do ANYTHING!

Just curious. Are there any other "Official State Dogs" that anyone is aware of?

Hagar.

I don't know about other states, but my dd did a report on Wisconsin this year and did find that they have a state dog.

"The American Water Spaniel was named in 1985 as our official state dog. Students from New London, Wisconsin proposed the spaniel because it is one of five dog breeds native to the United States and the only one native to Wisconsin. The American Water Spaniel is an outstanding hunter, watch dog and family pet."

You know...a state dog is a wonderful idea and Kansas should have the Cairn terrier.

But, how would other states decide what dog goes with what state?

A Saint Bernard, Newfoundland or Husky for Alaska, Chihuahau for New Mexico or even Texas but figuring out the rest would be so difficult.

The smallest dog for Texas? LOL! I don't think that would fly down here. We'll let New Mexico have the Chihuahua. We actually already have a State Dog, The Blue Lacy, but I think a Cattle Dog would have been a good choice too.

I was thinking Catahoula Leopard Dog for Louisiana and Boston Terrier for Massachusetts. I went and looked up if they had a State Dog and sure enough, they do and those are the breeds.

Some others I thought of:

California: The quinesstential Movie Star dog - The Collie :)

Arkansas: Coonhound - after Where the Red Fern Grows

Florida: Lil' old lady dog like Toy Poodle or Bichon Frise

Colorado: Mountain type dog, like the Berner

Sorry Texas - the Keystone state - Pennsylvania has the Great Dane. Kansas should definitely sport the mighty Cairn Terrier as their state dog. Wonder if this is an update or something new for them?

I googled state dog symbols and only found only 11 states that have a state dog. Here are the others that haven't been mentioned:

Kentucky - Beagle

Maryland - Chesapeake Bay Retriever

Michigan - Golden Retriever

North Carolina - Plott Hound

South Carolina - Boykin Spaniel

Virginia - American Foxhound

:)This is turning into a fun item. I'm originally from Wisconsin, and was not aware that they had a State Dog. I do think the Cairn for Kansas would be a great choice. Hagar.

Since I am a native Californian and considering our current Govenor's ethnic background, how about a Dachshund or a Wiemeraner (sp?)!
