Lawn Spraying Service

I've had a lawn spraying service forever, and they were here today and I was talking to him about the dogs. He said as long as I waiting like 2 hrs for it to completely dry, it was safe. It's TrueGreen/Chemlawn, and they told me they use the saftest product around.....which could just be double talk for "not as bad as the next guy". Does anyone have any info on this?

I waited a good two hours to take them out, had them do their thing then ran them back in and wiped their feet off. I dont think i'll let they play in their yard till we get a good rain again. They can play on the front porch for a while, they like it better there anyway.

We've had Scott's Lawn Service and when I questioned them about the safety issue, they told me the same thing - two hours. I haven't seen any problems with Scully, thankfully. I'm not sure if that helps, but at least we were both told the same thing.

A friend with Scotties tells me when she takes her dogs places she heads for the worst looking grass she can find. If the grass looks too nice, she fears it's been treated.

Herbicide exposure and the risk of transitional cell carcinoma of the urinary bladder in Scottish Terriers. From that abstract, it looks like "phenoxy herbicides" - whatever those are - are suspect.

A friend that I used to get together regularly with to have doggy playdates started treating her lawn with one of the national services ...I think Chemlawn..

that is the day I stopped arranging doggie playdates at her house. The serviceman assured her that the chemicals were safe but I immedietly started researching to see if that was true..this was over a year ago, so I can't give you hard facts ..but after researching, I came to the conclusion it wasn't worth the risk...to pets or people.

Give me a not so great lawn over the "nuclear green" lawn anyday....

well, we've been here for over 15 years, and our other dog never had any ill effects from it....nor any of the cats. I guess it's a crap shoot.

Last year when all 3 had full reign of our backyard, I used nothing to combat weeds, crabgrass or insects/grubs. I only used an organic fertilizer twice....I lived with the weeds, crabgrass and what was left of my lawn after the grubs ate.

This year they have their own space and I'm doing the Scotts Program on our own lawn sections.

I've become a neurotic when it comes to pesticides/herbicides/fungicides....I cover my herb barrel and my veggie garden when applying these chemicals because sometimes our spreader gets a mind of it's own.

I use the Milky Spore treatments in all edible gardens to combat grubs and for other diseases I use organic treatments.

We use True green as well and I was told the same thing. 2 hours. They usually come first thing in the morning so it is way more than 2 hours before savannah is out there however, on treatment day, savannah only is in the grass to potty. Her playtime is in the house or a walk on the concrete. We haven't had any problems.

A Cairn is a tough little dog and is probably more resistant to lawn chemicals than my previous Toy Poodle. Just the overspray from my neighbor's lawn treatment darn near killed him. He developed bloody vomit and bloody diarhea (sp?). Emergency vet trip and large bill. After that time, my neighbor would alert me when her lawn was treated so I could keep my dog off the lawn for awhile. I would wait until it's completely dry before permitting the dog onto the treated lawn. Better safe than sorry. Hagar

We used a lawn service years ago...until my DD became sick from it. My mom was babysitting and had my DD on a blanket in the backyard. Her feet. most likely, touched the grass and she developed huge blisters on her toes. We ended up in the Emergency Room. We will never have a lawn service again. I love looking at green, lush grass, but don't want to pay the price for it.

We used Truegreen for a few months but were very disatisfied w/ them. I treat my own lawn now. What I do when I need to weed/feed the backyard is fence off half of it. I keep a large roll of 3 ft. chicken type wire that I unroll to section off part of the yard. I then treat the area that my dogs can't get to. After a few weeks, I section off the other half of the yard to treat. I did this last year and it worked great. It's funny to see the dog's expression when they come out to a different section. They love it even more when the fence is removed and they once again have the entire yard.

That's a good idea Beth, I think one thing i'll do from now on is have them skip their play yard, maybe once at the beginning of the year and skip it from then on. Heck, it's nothing but holes now anyway!!! Was like running over warning tracks with the mower yesterday!!! LOL
