Abby and the 4 Lane Highway

We live 40 miles from town, so I made vet appt and oil change appt for same day. At the Jeep dealer there was a very nice bench outside to sit and watch all the people coming and going. When it was time to go back into the service garage to get my jeep. Abby all of the sudden pulled backwards so hard that she backed right out of her collar and there I was standing with a leash and collar and no dog. It wouldn't have been a problem if there wasn't a "helpful" guy right behind me who made a grab for her right away. Once you do that "the game is on". She thinks it's a game and runs like the devil.

To make a very long story short, I had 16 salesmen, mechanics, lot boys, and customers all trying to help me catch her. At one point I was crying as she ran up the drive within a few feet of a 4 lane highway. After 45 minutes of chasing her across and under 1 mile of new cars in the lot, one of the salesmen brought out his lunch (beef noodle cassarole). Of course as soon as I set it down, she came immediately. I was crying and shaking so hard I thought I was going to have a heart attack. I've never been so scared in my life.....

Needless to say, she is getting a new collar tomorrow. I never want to go through that again. (If I wasn't already totally grey I would be after today)... NEVER AGAIN!

I could just imagine how hard your heart must have been pounding. I can't imagine how I'd feel. I'm going to have to find the website I bought my harness at. I love it because it hooks around the neck and around the middle. If one is to come loose, I still have my baby. I am so glad your Abby was interested in the smell of beef noodle casserole. I can't think of many foods these Cairns aren't interested in. I bet Abby thought she was playing the game of her life w/ all of these mechanics joining in. Give her a hug for me tonight.

That's a nightmare. Wow.

Sophie also wears a harness, she pulled her head out of her collar while we were crossing a main street, then spooked, we had several anxious moments.

I have found out, the hard way.....when the girls get loose that if i try to get them, they run....if i turn around and say 'come on' they will follow me. Too nerve racking for sure though....that's why we're in classes!

Glad it turned out ok w/Abby. Sorry it took so much out of you.

Yes, it seems only recently we've had way too many cases of escaped Cairns. Think Eli's behind it?

I think I would have had a major heart attack if it were me at the dealership. Thank God he's now home safe and sound.

I am so happy to hear this worked out okay. When I saw the heading my heart skipped a beat.

Yes I do think that their is a CUR communication going out. Mett & Bratt tried to escape on my Hubby yesterday because the UPS guy was here.

OMG! I am so glad that you were able to get her back. This is my ultimate nightmare.

I had a similar experience taking Scully to the vet. I pulled over because she had the "runs" all over my front seat and I got out to come around and try and clean it up and she escaped onto a four lane highway. Like you, I was hysterical and crying and she just ran and ran. Somehow her leash got caught in a crack in the median and that's how I was able to get her.

Enough of these pups running away!!!!! My heart can't take it.

OMG how terrifying!

Don't they just love a game of chase? I'm so glad this had a happy ending, these guys sure know how to scare us.

WOOF! Eli, here. Hey, I resent the accusation that I advocate escaping willy nilly and risking our sweet lives! Tho the thought has occurred to me, I am all about safety. I am all about equal rights, same as uprights. You know, unlimited treats and toys. Soft, tender parts of broccoli with cheese sauce, not the tree trunks. TV on Animal Planet, 24/7. Memory foam mattresses and down pillows. Unlimited and uncensored internet access. Charge cards and ATM cards. Opposible thumbs. You know, all the stuff we Cairns are entitled to.

I do know where my bread is buttered. (mmmm... buttered bread!) I've got it made in the shade here. I don't really want to leave.

I plan to continue to rule CUR from behind my invisible fence. And I totally obey that boundary. I do not advocate that any of my fellow Cairns put themselves in danger. After all, there is strength in numbers!!

NOW BEHAVE! But keep up the barking!

Woof!

I am so glad she is okay, Sugar can back out of leash also that is why she wears a harness when she is out visiting.

Let me just echo the 'glad it turned out well & how frightening that must have been for you' comments. When Abe gets away, the ONLY way he will come back is if you go to the car and say, wanna go for a ride? He will come, and I put him in, get the keys and take a quick ride, just so that he does not learn to mistrust us. I hate that feeling that you get when the get away from you. I am very glad to hear yours turned out ok!

OMG! I am so glad that she came back! It is so scary when they are loose like that. Savannah has luckily never been loose near a really busy street (knocking on wood) but I can only imagine what would happen if she did! When we are on walks she tries to chase cars. That would spell disaster. Savannah escaped from a collar once (luckily we were in a fenced area) but after that, she has worn a harness. I have only tried to see her escape the harness once (something scared her) and she was unsuccessful. Give extra love and kisses to Abby tonight!!

We give dogs time we can spare, space we can spare and love we can spare. And in return, dogs give us their all. It's the best deal man has ever made.

Glad you got a happy ending!

My children like walking Alfie around the block (mainly to meet up with other teenagers - walking around with a cute dog is the latest trend <_<). They must have heard me say this more than 100 times, when Alfie sees a squirrel and goes crazy, never try pulling him towards you or else he'll pull away. Harness OR collar, he will just slip off when he puts on his 'brakes' and pulls backwards. Lately (thank God) they have learned to call his attention and make him sit.....
