kayharley Posted April 7, 2006 Posted April 7, 2006 OMG....I totally freaked out this morning and I won't be cooking anything good for hubby in a long time. First line of security is their crates; then the gate that keeps them upstairs; then the door that separates downstairs from upstairs; and finally the door to the garage. Well this morning DH (dumb, not darling) forgot to crate Elliott and Madison before he left for work. He also forgot to close the stairway gate and forgot to close the door at the bottom of the stairs. I stopped at the supermarket before I came home at 10:00. I open the garage door and start to bring groceries in when here comes Elliott running down the driveway. He has the happiest look on his little face and my heart stopped! All I felt was panic. Luckily I had a sandwich in my hand that I picked up at the deli. I very calmly said "Hi buddy, would you like a treat?" and lowered the sandwich so he could see it. I was able to grab him, give him some roast beef, hug him like I've never hugged him before and then when he was safely upstairs, I cried. With all my defenses to prevent their escape, there was a loophole.
bradl Posted April 7, 2006 Posted April 7, 2006 Yikes. I know that feeling of shock and panic when you see them where you don't expect them and where they don't belong. You kept your cool and all was well. So, will DH be on Canidae or Eukanuba for a while? Restrain the urge to make it eunuch-a-nooba please CAIRNTALK: Questions? Anna_525 Posted April 7, 2006 Posted April 7, 2006 That's funny, Brad. Kayharley, I'm so glad you were there at the right place at the right time. It was meant to be! I can imagine Elliot's happy face...there is indeed a thin line between dumb and darling.....
Tracy A. Posted April 7, 2006 Posted April 7, 2006 OMG Kay- I am so glad to hear this had a happy ending. Tracy, Amos, Walter, Brattwrust & Mettwurst a.k.a The Gremlins
tlwtheq Posted April 7, 2006 Posted April 7, 2006 It is indeed a sinking feeling in the pit of your stomach when you see them come running at you all happy and eager to greet at a time and place where they're not supposed to be. I'm glad your babies are OK. Tara, Olie and Teddy's Mom Max and Nelly
hallswel Posted April 7, 2006 Posted April 7, 2006 I am so glad you had the sandwich. I have a spare dog house if you need it for your DH it belonged to our Irish Setter so it is big> Give Elliott a smoch from Sugar Liz Rebel, Hammurabi, Sugar, Dirty Harry, Paint, Duncan and Saffron
Cairns2 Posted April 7, 2006 Posted April 7, 2006 My heart stopped just reading that! So glad you got home in time and had food with you to boot! Speaking of boot, one big boot to DH!!! Can't be too diligent with these dogs. Happy that they are all safe and sound. Whew!
tena Posted April 7, 2006 Posted April 7, 2006 Oh man...that could of been bad. Thank goodness for sandwhiches...poor forgetful hubby, he is now in the crate Sophie
Scully'sMom Posted April 7, 2006 Posted April 7, 2006 My worst nightmare....that just totally scares me!!! Glad to see that Elliott is a sandwich kinda guy. Tell DH that everyone here has decided HE's in the crate tonight and Elliott gets the bed.
MikeC Posted April 7, 2006 Posted April 7, 2006 Wow, that's a real heartstopper! Yes, it was a good thing that you had the sandwich to coax Elliott. Glad it all worked out. Brad - love your comment! Mike
Darcy's Mom Posted April 7, 2006 Posted April 7, 2006 I too read the post with heart in mouth. Wow, I can only imagine what you were thinking about your DH after your cry. What is it about close the gate that these men (my DH is the worst) don't get? I was beginning to think I was overprotective cuz I ALWAYS close the gate from the den into the foyer just in case someone rings the doorbell. I have told him over and over, why is the gate not closed? His remarks always: well, Darcy wanted to look out the dining room window. I came home from work yesterday and he "mentions in passing" that Darcy got out. Turns out, as usual, he didn't have the gate closed, there was a rucus with the dog across the street getting out of his yard, Molly was barking out back, DH went to the front door to check things out and when he opened the screen to lean out, you guessed it. He said all he saw was a black streak run past him. I have no idea how he caught her, I was so mad I didn't even ask! So I can definitely sympathize with you about how helpless you feel when they accidentally get loose. Heart failure in the making!!!
grillywarren Posted April 7, 2006 Posted April 7, 2006 So glad everything worked out. I am confused .... was he in the garage? Free roam + garage + elliott = a scary situation. Please let me know if he was in the garage, is everything dog friendly in there? I am all over my dh about the garage....antifreeze and whatnot! Worried Ellie
mrskti Posted April 7, 2006 Posted April 7, 2006 what's worse than a dumb husband.....an autistic grandson that leaves doors open!!!! He did that last week while we were still home on the farm, and dori was headin down the field.....full bore. She wasnt stopping with anything I said, so i turned and headed to the house and she followed, thank God....cant smack the dog, certainly cant smack an autistic kid....so you hug them both, and try, try, try to explain.... Kay, I guess what you're saying is we must always have a sub strapped to our hips!!!! Thank goodness Elliot is ok...what would we do w/o him!! Terry, mom of Dori and Ellie Mae
savannahsmom35 Posted April 7, 2006 Posted April 7, 2006 OMG! It must be something in the air. This happened to us a few weeks ago and guess what? It was the DH (D=DUMB) fault! He had sinus surgery a few weeks ago and he is the cook in the house so I was bringing home supper every night that week. Well, I also had to stop at Wal-Mart and pick up somethings. He calls me on the cell phone to see where I am at cause he is hungry. He proceeds to tell me that he hasn't been up out of the bed all day and Savannah is in her crate. Per doctor's orders, he was not supposed to be bending over for at least a week so I told him I was on my way home, just to leave her there until I got there. I got home and the neighbors dog was out for a potty break. She RAN over to the truck to see me. I have my hands full of Wal-Mart bags and dinner. She is in the garage so I couldn't close the garage with her in it. I open the door in the garage to put some thigns down and out runs Savannah!!! Needless to say, I throw the bags down, have a few words to say and run out the door. Savannah is playing with Shelby who is very reliable with come. So I figure, Savannah hears come when there is another dog outside and I may as well be talking to the back of my hand so I try to get Shelby to come to me so that I can grab Savannah. I honestly think that Shelby must have sensed my panic because she pinned Savannah down so that I could grab her (not hard or anything. Shelby is a Golden/Chow mix so she is bigger). I grabbed Savannah and went inside. I was SOO mad but then saw the DH with the gauze taped under his nose looking so pitiful and I couldn't yell at him. He was in enough pain already. He sure was lucky he had surgery or Shelby would have been eating his meal that night! We give dogs time we can spare, space we can spare and love we can spare. And in return, dogs give us their all. It's the best deal man has ever made. -M. Acklam Savannah's Dogster Page
Eliz222 Posted April 7, 2006 Posted April 7, 2006 Whew! I'm glad that everything turned out ok!!! Good job, Elliot!
bostoncairn Posted April 7, 2006 Posted April 7, 2006 Nice work with the cool thinking Had kind of a similar experience one time when we were out for our morning walk and I looked down to see Charley not attached to his leash The clip had come undone somehow! Every fiber in my being wanted to lunge after him and grab his collar (busy Boston sidewalk!!) - but I got my wits together, hunkered down and called him to me with a treat in my hand....he never even knew he had come undone
kayharley Posted April 7, 2006 Author Posted April 7, 2006 So glad everything worked out. I am confused .... was he in the garage? Free roam + garage + elliott = a scary situation. Please let me know if he was in the garage, is everything dog friendly in there? Worried Ellie <{POST_SNAPBACK}> No, Elliott was in the upstairs part of our raised ranch with the other two. He only had free reign to go downstairs to our son's "apartment/living quarters" which connects to the garage by another door. Unless someone left that door open would he be able to venture into the garage. (we're careful, well, I'M careful about chemicals and such. He definately could chew some tools up but that would serve the males in my family right) Anyway, once I opened the garage and the door to the lower level did he bolt. I never thought of him being in that area loose. Hubby came home tonite with his "tail" between his legs saying over and over again how sorry he is. Might this be a good time for me to ask for a Cairn puppy?
brin145 Posted April 7, 2006 Posted April 7, 2006 I have now decided to carry a sandwich (or other delectible, inrresistible dog yummies) with me whenever I return home.
toomanypaws Posted April 8, 2006 Posted April 8, 2006 I'm so glad Elliot chose the sandwich over the adventures through the neighborhood. I was concerned about this happening after Kiara got out once due to dh not closing the door leading to the garage and the garage, door was open. What I did was I ran a fence along the back of the garage that leads from the door into the kitchen over to a side door in the garage that opens to their fenced "potty" area. This was I don't worry if I press the garage door opener and the kitchen door is open. I think Abbey and Hannah would just come running down the driveway to me and run right back in w/ me, but I know Kiara would be gone to explore. I'm sure Elliot got alot of praises and hugs today. <img src="http://img.photobucket.com/albums/1003/maiwag/terriersiggy.jpg" border="0" class="linked-sig-image" /> Beth, mom to Ninja (5), Hannah (7), Abbey (7 1/2), Kiara (10)
kandya Posted April 8, 2006 Posted April 8, 2006 You are all right. Husbands can't keep gates closed. I purchased 3 self closing gates and we haven't had a problem since... Abby Rose
Lisad Posted April 8, 2006 Posted April 8, 2006 Wow!! Glad to hear Elliott is safe and sound. We would all be lost without our Elliott!! I have cried a few times myself due to "shot nerves" where my pup is concerned. I'm sure DH felt very, very bad. Phew!! Good luck on your request for your new Cairn puppy (Kandy, cute picture of your sleeping dh and your beloved pups.)
Tracy A. Posted April 8, 2006 Posted April 8, 2006 Kandya- thats too funny... that pic.... i have one simular, if the battery on my digital just handn't died I'd post mine.... too funny.... Tracy, Amos, Walter, Brattwrust & Mettwurst a.k.a The Gremlins
