male- female coat differences?

are there differences between the male and female coats? my male has a very coarse coat with no detectable undercoat. the female's coat is very soft with lots unerneath. both are registered but we did not see the male's parents on site. i was looking for a male in a hurry-- bad mistake- and was wondering if i got taken.
