Cairn with a bone - a funny sight

Recommended Posts

I just returned home with two BIG marrow bones for Murphy & Trapper. Cooked them for 30 minutes in 350 dgrees, as our vet suggested and gave them to the pups. Our gal, Murphy took to it instantly, as usual. She's a bone nut! Trapper, on the other hand, seems to like to delay gratification. It's been 45 minutes now and he is STILL walking around the yard looking for a safe place to bury the darn thing so his sister, Murphy won't find it. Everytime I look out the window, he just keeps walking back & forth with this almost 2 lb. bone! He's cracking me up! post-527-1142622798_thumb.jpg

I think we all can relate to that picture. How cute!! Do those bones last a long time with your pups? Just wondering.

What a cute picture! That's exactly how my Abbey is. While Kiara and Hannah will play in the yard, Abbey will walk around w/ one special toy. She does this w/ bones too.

Too cute!!

Darcy's mom, Yes, the big marrow bones last & last & last. I cut off all the fat, scoop out some of the marrow & leave the bits of meat on it. One will last 2-4 weeks or more. Good thing is they never chip off chunks of bone. It really never seems to wear down. They just bury it & dig it up over & over. I also like Bully Weaves. The 8" ones will last 4-7 days. Good thing is they can't break off pieces or peel off strips so choking is not common. I do, however, take them away when they get to be about 2" big because Trapper WILL try to swallow it whole as it softens up. I supervise their munching on these.

Sophie carries her special chew around and gives under the breath growls if the cats look her way. It's the only time she lets me sit in the chair alone...she leaps from it to run for her bed and chew at the first sign of feline.

Frankly, they want nothing to do with her old chew...but she still does it.

Yeah, marrow bones rule! I also bake them and remove the fatty marrow (don't want pancreatitis)

Here is the Connor monopolizing three bones!

Question....I have never removed the 'marrow" before giving.

Is it really that bad for them??

How cute!!!

Question though - I thought bones were meant to be given raw.....so as to ensure they dont splinter or get stuck in the dogs thoart???

Cute photo! Its funny watching them with a bone, Roxy does the same thing (after she's chewed it). She just can't work out where to leave it, she tried burrying one in my bed last week <_<

I too thought bones should only be given raw, what is the reason you were told to cook them?

Yeah, I always thought raw too. But vet said that one never know where it came from, how long it's been there & nasty stuff could live in the marrow. She said cooking it only for 30 min. & only at 350 wouldn't splinter it. I have seen no signs of chipping, splintering, etc.

After meeting Trapper yesterday this pic makes perfect sense. :)

Linda's children Murphy and Trapper are adorable. Stay tuned for pix.

Hi! I also bake marrow bones for Riley - - - just to ensure there is no bacteria on them - - also 350 degrees for about half an hour. He loves them and will chew on them for hours - - I usually take them away after a 2 week period and throw them out - - - they are very reasonable to buy and keep Riley busy for a while!!
