Cairnmania
Hi Toto, I always try to think about what I will really end up calling the dog. If you start out with a short name, like Riley, that's most likely what you will call him. If you name him Napolean you'll probably end up calling him Nap, or Napo ... or something equally hideous because long names don't roll of the tongue easily when you're calling a dog. KAL-EL I bet you would end up calling your dog "KAL" (which is kind of nice). My other tip is to wait until you have your puppy home for a few days before deciding on the name. Sometimes your favorite name just does not seem to fit a dog's personality and they'll do something that is your "eurika" moment when the perfect name sort of appears as if by divine (or ) inspiration. brin145
We just went through the naming dilemma with our new pup. I think Stacey is right that you might pick out a name and then change your mind based on being with the puppy. Before we got the pup, Gus would never have been in my top three picks, but he is just perfect for a "Gus". He is gruff and fiesty. My husband wanted Neo, but it just didn't fit. TheScotts
Just make sure it is something you won't mind yelling up and down the block once in a while. I wound up taking care of a dog named "Sparky" for five years---he used to run accross to the neighbor's farm and I had to run after him in my bathrobe, usually, hollering "Spaaaaaarrrrrkkyyyyyy!" So I think Napolean is RIGHT OUT! I like Scottish-sounding names for these dogs! Riley is cute!

Eliz222
We named our two after the book To Kill a Mocking Bird, but when I was growing up we named our Cairns after a map of Scotland! My mom gave us a map and we found places with interesting names which we used. Two of the names were Minch and Peebles...don't ask me where these places are now! LOL! Just a thought! rileysmum
I love the name Riley but in our house it belongs to the most loving little boy you will ever find my ten year old son . I like the names Riley and Trent both are easy to call or scream.

Guest true_w
We have two cairns. Brady and Riley. We had a cairn before these two and I find that we usually end up with nicknames for them and call them by those as much as we do their formal names. They seem to understand all the nicknames without any problems.
Tracy A.
I've always done the 'yell' test/calling test..... I'll take potential name and run it through the works.... and see if I can scream it with ease! The only exception to this was my GSD Waylon, whos (and all you breeders out there take note, cause it sounds cute when you do it) Breeder decided to have a Country Music theme for the litter- Poor Waylon was so used being called Waylon, I was unable to change his name..... I got him when he was 4 months old..... And yes, he had bothers/sisters named'Reba, Dolly, Willy, and Buck'. I felt bad for the poor guy, so on his papers he became 'Northstars Cheyenne Autumn'. Yelling Waylon can pose its issues, also the fact its hard to breakdown into nicknames....other than little waylon....ect. wags
At first I thought Nolan sounded good. But you'd run into a problem with the word, no. Riley is VERY nice. There are a few Rileys here Cricket is nice, unless you have cricket invasions like we do. Trent is nice. Napolean may sound good if you call him "nappy." Kal-el... "Kally!" I ilke that. I guess I pick "Kally!"
