kandya
I dropped Abby off at the vets this morning to get spayed. When I called this afternoon to see how she was doing the vet said they also removed a baby tooth and 4 dew claws. I was shocked when he told me dew claws can grow back. Any one ever heard of this before? I knew one of them was growing out in a curley cue and thought it was just an aberation. But he said the other 3 were coming through the skin too! Anyway, I can't wait to get her home with her little cone head. I have no idea how I'm going to keep her from running around, but I'll give it a shot. tlwtheq
Wow, didn't know they do the cone head thing for spays. I've never had a female Cairn and it was never done for any of my cats. You owe yourself a picture of that; it's very endearing to look back and remember how you made it through the experience. Hope Abby Rose recovers quickly. tena
I've never had a critter get a cone for spaying either. They recover much faster than you think, a young critter is darting around giving you a nervous breakdown within hours. Congratulations on having her spayed. And I hope she recovers well. Forgive my total ignorance but what are dew claws and why do they need removed? Tena Sophie

CathyAnn
Good luck with Abby!! We all worry when our furkids have to go thru this. About the cone....some vets automatically send this home with pups, but others do not until the owner sees licking and/or pulling at the sutures. Personally, I'd rather not put the dog thru having to wear one unless necessary. Cathy Cathy and Piper
myhoneymoonbaby
Vinny was fixed two weeks ago...they had the cone on him when I picked him up....but as soon as the drugs wore off, he was twiriling his head violently, to get the cone off. To the point where, he almost fell down the stairs because his peripheal vision was limited! We took it off and watched him, he didn't really lick too much, so we were good to go! By the way-they can walk a man on the moon, but they can't come up with a better system to keep a dog from irritating an affected area??!!?? FIGURES! Guest Darcy's Mom
Hi, you mentioned the dew claw was growing through the skin...was it nail or the bone itself? If it is the nail, that's very common, none of mine Cairns ever had the whole digit removed, but I understand it is a very common procedure. We just had it clipped along with the rest of their nails. They do grow in a curly cue shape and that's maybe why some opt to remove them. Hope Ms. Anna Rose recovers really quickly. Give her lots of extra kisses and hugs from me and Darcy. Teri9672
I hope your baby recovery quickly. Teona had the same.... spay, rear dew's removed and 2 baby teeth pulled. She looked so pitiful. If she has bandages on her feet make sure they aren't too tight. After the second set of bandages were put on they we cutting the circulation in her feet and they swelled up really big
Scully'sMom
I'm sending good wishes to your little girl - but I'm sure that she'll be fine. I've had two female Cairns spayed and never had cones with either of them. I have NO experience with teeth being pulled or anything to do with the dew claws. Is that normal not to experience that??? Now you all have me wondering!
mrskti
Oh Teri that pic makes me feel so sad for her...poor baby. Is this dew claw removal something we're suppose to do? I'm just working on getting their nails clipped!!!! Wild girls. Terry, mom of Dori and Ellie Mae
toomanypaws
I hope your Abby Rose is doing well tonight. Having had three females spayed, only one had to wear a cone. My oldest Kiara opened herself back up within a few days after being spayed, and I had to take her back in to be stapled! With a little Banguard over their incisions, my other two never messed w/ them. <img src="http://img.photobucket.com/albums/1003/maiwag/terriersiggy.jpg" border="0" class="linked-sig-image" /> Beth, mom to Ninja (5), Hannah (7), Abbey (7 1/2), Kiara (10)
Teri9672
Is this dew claw removal something we're suppose to do? I'm just working on getting their nails clipped!!!! Wild girls. <{POST_SNAPBACK}> most breeders will clip the dew claws when they are very young. Tabitha already had her's clipped, but Teona still had them. The problem lies with them being a soft attachement or a bone attachment. Teona had both on the rear. The soft attachement can sometimes get caught on things and be pulled out causing bleeding. Guest Darcy's Mom
Okay, now I'm confused...Darcy's dew claws are on her front paws and she had none on her back feet. Is this normal? I noticed in the picture of Teona that her back feet were bandaged due to dew claw removal. My other cairn's dew claws were also on their front legs. BTW, Teri, poor Teona looked miserable in that picture you posted. Was that from embarrassment or just her feeling miserable from the surgery? bradl
Some have rear dew claws, some don't. Some have only one rear dewclaw. Pretty much all combinations are possible and all are in the realm of 'normal' as far as I know. CAIRNTALK: Questions?
