purebella
Nothing gross! Bella doesnt have a doggy smell as such, but more of a sweet musky smell. Not sure whether that is because she is still a puppy...... It got me thinking as to what other people's Cairns smell like
bradl
Dirt. And I love it. Quote CAIRNTALK: Questions? Need help? → Support Forum Please do not use PMs for tech support CRCTC: Columbia River Cairn Terrier Club

Tracy A.
Mett & Bratt had that sweet puppy smell when they were young- now they smell like dogs with dash of dirt, a splash of ourdoors, and a sprinkle of what ever they have rolled in! Milopup
The fur is a clean smell but the paws are....i think we described them on the forum as cheetos or corn chips, stinky feet for sure.
wags
The day Wes smelled like mildew we gave him a bath!
tena
Sophie ranges from wet dog...to dirty dog...depending on her walk adventure. She doesn't smell bad...just...musky. Quote Sophie
Cairnmania
It depends where I smell my dogs. Abby likes to roll in smelly stuff - especially rub her neck in anything stinking. Bird poo, fox poo and wee, worms .. you name it. I'm always surprised if all I can smell is a light dog odour when I sniff behind her ears! Rudi tends to stick his head in shrubs following scents, so his head often smells very foxy (real smelly wee). We have lots of foxes in my area and they have a very distinct odour that lasts for ages anywhere they go or rub. If it gets bad enough that I notice without getting close I rub them down with a dog smell remover. I've never bathed Abby and I've only bathed Rudi once. Rudi had a very strong kennel odour when I first got him, which I could not remove. He got a bath, but none since. I don't know if my house smells or not. I shampoo my rugs and use throws on the sofas, which get washed often. To be honest my husband smokes - never in the house, only in his workshop - but it is the one odour I do notice. wags
I must admit Wes' "baths" consist mostly of plain water. His favorite place to be is the bathtub and he never wants to come out.
Tersie
That's so funny about their feet!! I was talking with my husband about our pup's feet! They are very stinky. I thought maybe she was walking in something smelly. But they are sooo cute! And her fur always smells like where she's been. The days she goes to puppy day care to play with the pups she comes home smelling like D-O-G something terrible. But after a night in her crate on a freshly washed blankie, she smells like laundry the next morning. Tersie and Lucy
tlwtheq
Raddy79, I call what you're describing "puppy smell" and I love it. Olie (5 year old) and Teddy's (almost 4) scents are pretty neutral. Like others said, that can vary depending on what "goodies" they discover outdoors! Tara, Olie and Teddy's Mom Quote Max and Nelly
Kathryn
Dusty....warm...sometimes a little salty....and last night DH and I were talking about how much we love her smell.
CathyAnn
If I remember right, in the past, the odor from their feet was described as "Frito" feet.... . Cathy Quote Cathy and Piper
Logansmom
How funny. I was just noticeing this morning when we snuggled before I left that Logan smells like popcorn. I love all of his little smells....well almost all of them
bradl
We have a term of affection, "Little Cloud" that applies to that close, portable atmosphere one brings in from outside. It's charming when they arrive encased in a tangible aura of chilled air, carrying a scent of rose blossoms, fir needles, or dirt. Quote CAIRNTALK: Questions? sanford
I'm so glad this topic came up. I love sniffing my good-smelling cairn & was worried that people would think me peculiar, so I never told anyone. Sometimes, after a walk in the park, he'll sit next to me on a bench & I'll absentmindedly reach over & bury my nose in the top of his sweet smelling head. Then I realize that someone might see & I pretend I'm examining his ear. Thanks to this forum, I'm no longer "Waiting to Inhale". Mmmm...Good! Quote FEAR THE CAIRN! chrissysb
Funny how you mentioned about the feet. I love the little "frito" feet. I could just eat them up. I'm actually bordering on obsessing with his feet. I love to play with them when he's sleeping. (When did I turn into this person? )
tlwtheq
Ha Ha Ha..time for me to 'fess up. My weakness is their ears. Those babies' ears have been kissed so much in their lifetimes! They realized early on that it's a sign of affection. It's fairly common for either one of them to give my DH or me what DH calls an "ear bath." (Needless to say we have to be lying down for them to reach. ) They give each other ear baths, and I have seen them give both the cats and the rabbit ear baths. Also, dogs who are regular visitors or visitees, and have worked their way into the Lads' inner circle of acceptance seem to be entitled to ear baths. I love my chilluns. Cairns2
Yes, dirt describes it well, Brad, and I love it too! We call the Frito feet "popcorn feet". This thread reminded me of the day we had to put Andy down. I remember as we were driving to the vet, at one point I nuzzled my nose into his fur and took a deep breath. I wanted to be sure I would never forget that Cairn smell, and I never did.

CarCarDawn
Hi! Riley has a somewhat musky yet pleasant smell to him all the time and that outdoorsy smell - - AND - - he definitely has POPCORN feet!! I can't believe that others have described their Cairns as having "popcorn" feet - - - we thought Riley was an original!!!
toomanypaws
Well, I'm sure I'm not the norm here. My Cairns only smell is their "Frito" feet. They get brushed daily and misted w/ "Pooch Puppy", a conditioning Eau De Parfum. I know it's crazy, but it was a $42 bottle of dog perfume that has lasted almost 2 yrs. I baby wipe the Cairns after they've played hard outdoors and mist them a couple times a week w/ the perfume. Being Hannah sleeps w/ us alot, she's a nice smell to wake up to.
