My three cairns are being raised w/ other pets. Besides our cairns, we have 2 other dogs, 2 cats, 1 rabbit, 1 guinea pig and 1 hamster. We also have 4 birds (getting rid of one) and some reptiles (bearded dragons/geckos). I never allow my daughter (dd) to hold the rabbit, guinea pig, or hamster in the presence of a cairn. To me, it's teasing them being they were born to hunt. The rabbit is kept outside in a hutch most of the time and the cairns don't bother her at all. The guinea pig and hamster are in a backroom away from the cairns. If my dd has her rabbit and guinea pig out in the backyard, I don't allow the cairns out at that time. They all seem oblivious to the birds and only look into the reptile tanks if there's crickets hopping around.

The only barking that goes on is at the cats (1 cat, 1 kitten). We can't even say our cat's name w/o one of them barking. They're barking at the kitten because they think she's a new play toy. I just keep a rolled newspaper and threaten them w/ it when they bark and that quiets them.

I have gerbils and very rarely will Elliott get excited by them. I think they get used to sharing their homes with other pets although I doubt anything running loose would live very long.
