Before eating chewies

Has anyone noticed this with their cairn -- when I give Alfie a bully stick or chew bone, he looks at it, smells it, crouches and then jumps or runs away as if it's alive? Then I show him it's harmless, then he'd slowly start licking it before chewing it away....? It's funny but I wonder if you've seen it, too.

Carolina does that all the time. She will nudge it with her nose then back up with her butt in the air, jumping around. She does that for several seconds. She has to play with it first! She does that with treats, bones and "cookies" that are not her favorite, (her favorite ones she eats right away.) She also does it with small toys.

Add Savannah to the list! She has to "kill" her bones before she will eat them. She too jumps around and sticks her butt in the air. She also usually gets them in her mouth and shakes them. Finally she will calm down and start eating it.

We give dogs time we can spare, space we can spare and love we can spare. And in return, dogs give us their all. It's the best deal man has ever made.

Jack doesn't do that, but he does try to "hide" his bones after I give one to him. It is pretty hilarious to watch him try to "bury" it on the couch. He will finally walk away from it, but it is still in plain sight! I don't think Jack realizes how funny it is to watch him sometimes!

Kramer likes to play as well. I call him my CAT, he will paw at it then like scratch at it with his paw, just like a cat. He then will throw it out of his mouth and go get it, the farther he throws it the more he does it. They're so silly but a ball to watch.

And every new dog who comes into my life gifts me with a piece of their heart. If I live long enough, all the components of my heart will be dog, and I will become as generous and loving as they are" Missy Rainbow Bridge Memorial

That would be fun to see! My two grab their bones, run to the nearest spot on the rug and start chewing away!

We keep commenting on how these pups act like cats. All that hopping around, pouncing...they are a riot to watch. I sure miss they're play yard at home, no place to really let them run here. They have a large dog run, but it's not kept up to well. Anyway, fun to watch them play with treats for sure.

yep, Abe does all of the above, particularly IF it is NOT a favorite treat. and I totally agree with the cat like personality traits, Abe always has to be perched ON TOP of something or someone. But can you imagine life without a cairn now??

Kiara and Abbey immediately grab their chewies and go to a special spot, (usually their own bed) and chew them up. Not Hannah, she plays "hockey" w/ hers and only starts chewing on it if she sees that Abbey is interested in it.
