Eliz222 Posted May 24, 2005 Posted May 24, 2005 Finch is obsessed with her frisbee. I know I have talked about this before, but what is a healthy obession?? She lives and breathes for this frisbee. It's the first thing she grabs when she wakes up and it's with her all day. She doesn't want to go outside unless she has the frisbee with her. If I put it on the table (it's there now) she will sit and whine until I give it to her. My neighbor thinks I should take it away from her for a month and then limit it's use for only outside. What do you think I should do? This is what she nornally looks like...she lets it hool onto her lower teeth.....sigh.
Toto times 2 Posted May 24, 2005 Posted May 24, 2005 Why not just let her enjoy it? It does her no harm and obviously gives her a great deal of pleasure. She could be focussed on something which would be dangerous. My feeling is if she likes it so much it is a good thing and it saves you having to try to get her interested in some other toys (and spending big bucks buying more toys). By the way she's a cutie. Barb
Milopup Posted May 25, 2005 Posted May 25, 2005 Wish my pup would spend that much time with a toy - his obsessions tend to be quite short, just a day or so, but when he is obsessed, he is totally obsessed. Even pees with the toy in his mouth.
Eliz222 Posted May 25, 2005 Author Posted May 25, 2005 Well, I only lasted about an hour and back out in the backyard we went! I do know that it's great exercise for her and she loves it so much.....maybe I shouldn't listen to my neighbor.....
CathyAnn Posted May 25, 2005 Posted May 25, 2005 I think it's adorable !! I vote to let her keep it......maybe it's like a security blanket to her?? Cathy Cathy and Piper
wheezie23 Posted May 25, 2005 Posted May 25, 2005 I say let her keep it, too. It's not hurting anyone. thela Check out Tucker, Scruffy and Chloe's dogster pages: http://www.dogster.com/?82915 http://www.dogster.com/?85018 http://www.dogster.com/?327895
savannahsmom35 Posted May 25, 2005 Posted May 25, 2005 I say let her keep it too. I would recommend getting another one as back up in case something happens to this one. Savannah chewed a hole in her "baby" sheep and I had to go get her another one. They only had 2 left so I bought them both (one for now and one for back up). Savannah carries her sheep around a lot and even uses her as a pillow sometimes! I wouldn't take it away from her because that is the first toy that we gave her when we brought her home so I think it may be her security blanket as well. I think Finch would be a sad puppy if her frisbee got torn up or lost and you couldn't find another one! We give dogs time we can spare, space we can spare and love we can spare. And in return, dogs give us their all. It's the best deal man has ever made. -M. Acklam Savannah's Dogster Page
Eliz222 Posted May 25, 2005 Author Posted May 25, 2005 Good idea, Savannah'smom35! I do have another cloth frisbee, but it's not the same one. I "think" I got this one at Walmart, so when I go back, I'll pick up another. Thanks!
Anna_525 Posted May 25, 2005 Posted May 25, 2005 I think you should keep it. It's cute. My son was fixated on a stuffed toy dog, Pal. He's now a teenager but when I see Pal (propped up in the guest room) it makes me smile.....
Marmielin Posted May 25, 2005 Posted May 25, 2005 We have one of those for Tink, and she loves to play with it. When she isn't playing with it she chews on it, so I take it away to protect it. After all, I paid $16 at Petco for it. Are they cheaper at WalMart? Anyway, it is so cute to see this obsession. Tink isn't obsessive about anything - She is still like a two year child who has a short attention span - 2 minutes Lindab Marmielin
Kathryn Posted May 25, 2005 Posted May 25, 2005 Ditto on all above who say let her keep it. And be thankful that it's a quiet toy and not a squeaky toy!
Bekah Posted May 25, 2005 Posted May 25, 2005 Remember Linus from the Peanuts comic strip? Finch with her Frisbee reminds me of Linus with his blanket. I vote to let her keep it. I know when I was little I liked to have something to carry around, too
Milopup Posted May 25, 2005 Posted May 25, 2005 Definitely buy another one if you can find it - Bosco had two loves, a stuffed duckie and a flat terrycloth sheep. By the time we realized how much he liked both we couldn't find them anywhere. They are very shredded and have been mended so many times there is very little cloth left. We usually don't let him have them, but when we bring them out, he gets so upset that he wont see them again that he stuffs them in his mouth. We so wish we could find replacements...
MikeC Posted May 25, 2005 Posted May 25, 2005 I vote to let her keep it. I wish that Duffy had a toy that he was obsessed with. Normally he is obsessed with any toy that Mickey is playing with! MikeC
Scully'sMom Posted May 25, 2005 Posted May 25, 2005 I'd let Finch keep it as well. I wish Scully had one toy that she hadn't chewed the heck out of. I think it's adorable!
Gracie's Mom Posted May 25, 2005 Posted May 25, 2005 What a doll your Finch is! I see no reason to keep it away from this sweetie. My Grace is still really young but she has a beat-up mouse toy that she absolutely loves and carries it around all the time. Thanks for the great picture! Linda
hallswel Posted May 25, 2005 Posted May 25, 2005 I now have three of them so that i would not have to work so hard when it comes to throwing the frisbee to Rebel. I throw one he catches then I call frisbee he drops that one runs for the next and so on. That way I tire him out first hopefully. He loves catching and carrying his frisbee but never wants to bring it to me. He is usually so tired that he lays in the yard and has all three frisbees near him, I can pick them up and leave it on the table. I leave them outside otherwise he brings it to me all day and night wanting me to throw. He loves his frisbee just like Finch. Liz Rebel, Hammurabi, Sugar, Dirty Harry, Paint, Duncan and Saffron
toomanypaws Posted May 26, 2005 Posted May 26, 2005 Too cute! Let Finch keep her prized frisbee. Abbey is the same way w/ a purple porcupine ball that is an outdoor toy. The minute the 3 of them are ouside, Abbey grabs her ball and never lets go. Every so often she'll drop it and let me toss it for her. I'll have to update their website and add some pics of Abbey. Every picture of her outdoors is her w/ that ball in her mouth. <img src="http://img.photobucket.com/albums/1003/maiwag/terriersiggy.jpg" border="0" class="linked-sig-image" /> Beth, mom to Ninja (5), Hannah (7), Abbey (7 1/2), Kiara (10)
Eliz222 Posted May 26, 2005 Author Posted May 26, 2005 Thanks, everyone! I will tell my neighbor to mind her own business (not really...but I would like to!). Finch is very happy with her frisbee...even after playing for hours and hours with it! I just wish Scout could throw it for her and give my arm a rest!
kayharley Posted May 26, 2005 Posted May 26, 2005 That is the cutest thing I ever saw. That frisbee is his security toy and he is just so adorable with it in his mouth. I love your Cairns and your pictures of them are so fun to look at. He should definately keep it and maybe get a few more just to please your neighbor.
Eliz222 Posted May 26, 2005 Author Posted May 26, 2005 Wouldn't that put my neighbor over the edge??? LOL!
Guest Darcy's Mom Posted May 27, 2005 Posted May 27, 2005 I think Finch is precious with her frisbee. If it brings her that much joy, I say let her have it. At least it's not a dead mouse, squirrel, chipmuch, etc. she's carrying around. Dusty was our dear departed female cairn and we waited until she was about six yrs. old to have her spayed. Prior to having her spayed, she used to go into what the vet said was "false pregnancy" where she would take her little stuffed animals and treat them like they were her puppies. She would not let them out of her sight and would carry them everywhere with her. If we tried to remove them, she would whine and mope until we gave them back to her. She also showed signs of nesting with them, such as jumping up in the lounge chair and digging and circling and putting them just exactly where she thought they should be. Then she would lay down practically on top of them and dare anyone to bother her. Also she would sleep with them nestled up against her. It was so sad but cute at the same time. We knew then it was time to have her "fixed". I know Finsh probably isn't that old of a dog and this false pregnancy doesn't apply to her but it just goes to show how "human" these little dogs can be. If it's only a frisbee, consider yourself lucky.
Eliz222 Posted May 27, 2005 Author Posted May 27, 2005 Darcy's mom, we had a Cairn terrier that would do that too! Minch liked one of our baby dolls and would cradle it all the time. She would lick and lick this doll! We would take the doll away, or throw it across the room (we were just little girls then) and Minch would run across the room to retrieve her "baby". I believe she thought this baby doll was her real "baby".
abe's dad Posted May 30, 2005 Posted May 30, 2005 Abe has a stuffed cow that moo's and he loves it, but not to the point of Finch! He has only torn it up once, and I stitched up the little place, can you imagine, a cairn with a stuffed toy and NOT ripping it to shreds.... I vote to let Finch keep the toy too! Great picture!
Eliz222 Posted May 30, 2005 Author Posted May 30, 2005 Thanks, Abe's dad! She has chewed and chewed, and chewed, on this frisbee and it's still intact! We have an animal hospital (aka top of the ping pong table) that has lots of sick animals waiting to be put back together....lol!
