Who has the patience to deal with this feisty littly guy/girl nowadays? And they are not even very pretty!!

My neighbor has the kind of dog often currently desired. A cross between a pug and a shih tzu. Weighing barely four pounds. Very pretty long coat. Groomer takes care of this. Friendly. Easy to take care of. No need to take for walks. Run about in an apartment enough. Pop in purse if going somewhere.

We don't exercise much ourselves now anyway.Who wants to take a dog for a walk any more?

No wonder cairn on 'watch' list in UK. Not yet on 'most vulnerable list' but likely to be so soon.

Sigh

Scotties unfortunately are in the same extinction box! Both breeds are steeped in history, related to each other in bi gone years…they are feisty, think for themselves, are tough and hardy …what is not to love about them! . I suppose the positive thing about this is that when breeds become popular every Tom, Dick  and Harry get into the backyard breeding mode and that’s when the health of the breed goes down hill rapidly. I.e…bull dogs, cavalier spaniels, Labs, etc.

Cairns provide more communication, entertainment, friendship than a purse dog, but you have to work for it. No plug and play with these dogs. Just one more reason they don't fit easily into the modern world. Makes them more valuable and important. Doesn't mean people want the best. They want the most convenient.

Cairns have always been hard to find here in the Midwest (US). Most people have never heard of the breed until you mention "Toto".

But......since I got Atticus, I have noticed that many more people recognize the breed and many know someone who has one. We went to a concert, at our local park down the street, and brought Atticus with us. A couple came up to us to say hi and to say that they have two Cairns of their own!

It's really nice to see that people recognize Cairns, at least on our walks and at the concert!
