Eliz222
We have been Cairnless for almost 2 years now. After much searching, and researching breeders, we found a new puppy in the Chicago area that we are picking up next week. We are both beyond excited, and a little nervous! We haven't had a new puppy in our house in about 17 years. Our last dog, Finch, passed away at the ripe old age of 15 1/2. She, and all our other past Cairns, have all been female. This is our first male puppy. I'm sure I will be asking for all kinds of advice soon. Our breeder uses a litter box, which is new to us. We will be transitioning him to "potty outside" as soon as we can. We have been (well, let's be honest, I have been) purchasing chew toys, new leashes and collars (slip and reg), treats, treat bags.....and lots of other things puppies need. We start puppy kindergarten classes the following Monday. Life is about to get exciting! We are not set with the final name, but will have it soon.

Pepper Bug's Mom
My female, Pepper, was potty trained at 4 months. Brodie, my male, was potty trained at 3 years and still has an occasional accident! He will hold it until he is ready to burst and then makes a mad dash out the door or wait until we go on a walk and then go potty at the top of the trail. He is a hoot! calypso
What a darling! Congratulations on your new family member. Our puppy’s breeder also uses a litter box, and it’s very handy. We’ve been trying to develop a routine to anticipate her need to potty, and have managed to get her outside most of the time before she needs to use the box. She sleeps and has her meals in a crate, and we always take her outside before putting her in the crate and again before letting her loose in her pen or in the house. And after a nap, and whenever she seems antsy, and… It’s pretty attention demanding right now, but hope it will help the house training process. 1
Eliz222
Calypso, this is what we always did with our puppies, and it worked well with housebreaking. This is our first male puppy, so we shall see. It's time consuming, but well worth it. I am working part time now, so I hope it doesn't take longer than it did with Finch. We used the door hanging bell with Finch, which worked well. Scout started using it too, although she was house trained 2 years prior. Scout started using the bell just because she wanted to go outside to play, and it was ALL day long, so we had to quickly get rid of it. Finch was already house trained at this point. Cairns are very smart!
Hillscreek
I used the bell with Angus but the same thing happened as with Scout. As soon as he realized ringing the bell meant the door opening and he could go out and play or do whatever he wanted he rang it all the time and we also had to get rid of it!! calypso
That’s so funny about the bell, but not a surprise with our smart Cairns. House training always seems to take forever, but eventually we do get through it!
