New Cairn

Hello, All.

I know I am going to get pounded here. I'm sorry. But I answered an ad in the paper advertising Cairn puppies for sale and was deeply saddened to find myself at what was, without question, a puppy farm. My husband and I left but couldn't get the sad eyes of one dog out of our minds and my husband is on his way to rescue this little guy right now as I type. I KNOW I am not supposed to support puppy farms. I'm sorry! But we couldn't leave him there. I hope we didn't just make a huge mistake.

My question now is.... How do I report this farm? I have been perusing the web and have not been able to find any information on how to report one when it's been discovered. The state these animals are in is pathetic. The man does not even know off the top of his head how many dogs he has, how many breeds of dogs he has, or anything about the breeds, in general. They do not leave their cages.

Please don't pound me too, too hard. Looking for some help, if someone cares to offer it.

Thanks.

Call your local animal shelter and if you don't have one or can't find it call the Sheriff's Office for information.

Yes, I agree with Hallswel as far as reporting this farm. I have no intentions of beating you up as I may have done the same thing. These poor little creatures are not responsible and did not ask to be born. They need love and human contact and hopefully the authorities will shut this breeder down. I would take the puppy to your vet and have it throughly checked from head to toe. Good luck and let us know how the pup is doing!

This page contains a lot of information about how to report something like this. While part of it is specific to Columbus Ohio, you can obviously substitute your local equivalent offices and organizations for those few areas. They list lots of agencies I would not even have thought of (Zoning Commissionfor instance), as well as providing detailed information about how to file a credible, and effective, AKC report requesting investigation.

I don't think any one of us would "pound" you for being compassionate and caring. Hopefully your little pup will be healthy and give you a lifetime of love and pleasure. But what about the others at that place who may not be so fortunate?

Please report this "person" and don't give up. I don't know what kind of location he is breeding these dogs in....residential, business, agricultural but I give you credit for walking away..... I would have probably done something that would have landed me in jail (but then it would have made the situation public)

There are many organizations that support the welfare of dogs and the sites Brad gave you is a wonderful start. Unfortunately here in CT, as well as many other states, as long as a dog has shelter (and it can be a dilapidated lean-to) and water (and it doesn't have to be fresh) then the animal is not considered neglected. But the breeding & selling is a business and that there might be a way to get this horrible person arrested.

Sorry if I sound mean....I'm usually a very happy/funny person but I get upset when I hear about things like this.

Please keep us posted and good luck with your little one.

I wouldn't pound you either. My heart goes out to you for rescuing one. I probably would do the same thing and then cry for the others left behind. I agree w/ the others to report this. It really breaks my heart to think of the living conditions of some animals. I actually left a pet board because I got so angry at this one poster who didn't see anyhing wrong w/ leaving her 3 dogs w/ plenty of food and water for 2 weeks! I couldn't believe that no one supported me w/ my feelings about this.

Make sure your pup gets a clean bill of health and has had all of his vaccinations needed so far. Clean him up and post a picture for us.

Keep us updated about the puppy mill.

NO WAY would I have been able to walk away from those pups and the conditions they were living in. I, also would NEVER think to "pound" on anyone for compassionate feelings like yours. I believe everything happens for a reason and I couldn't help but think perhaps you were brought to that place for two reasons: (1) To connect with the little guy you're bringing home; and (2) Put this disgusting individual out of business and stop him from what he's doing. Please let us know how you make out.

I couldn't believe my eyes - how could ANYONE think that leaving those dogs home alone was alright. No one stood up for you? They're ALL pathetic human beings.

Your compassionate posts nearly brought me to tears. Thank you all. I will keep you posted on how things go. It's 5:15 here and we have had Charlie for a little over 3.5 hours. I have fallen in love.

He is very, very, very timid - no doubt due to his being in a wire cage for 15 weeks. The only handling he has had (his breeder said, as if this were a great selling feature) was to get poked with needle and have worming medicine shoved down his throat. If he yaps, the guy said, just smack him upside the head once or twice and he should get the message. Gads.

He is beginning to open up a bit.... Was not ecstatic with the bath I immediately gave him when he arrived... but still flinches a bit when hands come near him. He has adopted me, it seems, and is following me around, refusing to sleep unless he is in my lap.

Or my son's lap, where he is right now, sound asleep. :)

I so hope he comes out of his fear. Today is Friday.. we will have him at the vet by tomorrow or Monday at the latest. Hopefully he is physically sound.

I adore this little guy already.... My head is still filled with the thoughts of the ones left behind. :(

At any rate, thanks again for your support, all of you. It felt so WRONG giving this man money (I'll take a check but then I'll have to charge you tax.... grrrrrr.....freak......) but I am glad now that I have Charlie at home. I will seriously look at the links tomorrow morning and contact as many places as I can find. There should be a law against puppy farms. One hears about them and feels awful but doesn't really know what they're like til they have been in one.

OMG....I can't believe what I just read from your post!

If he yaps, the guy said, just smack him upside the head once or twice and he should get the message. Gads.

Right now I'm ready to get into my vehicle and drive WHEREVER it is that that monster is living and do whatever is needed to get him away from those dogs!!

It may not be a legal thing to do but I would stop payment on my check...let that SOB take you to court!! Then you produce the evidence of his neglect and cruelty.

Sorry, Brad, I'm getting emotional and angry.

ANGRY...............me too. These are the kind of people that have no business around any kind of animals. Breeding for money and profit with no thought at all for the animals. I cannot imagine any human in their right mind smacking a defenseless puppy for doing what is natural to them. God bless you for taking this poor little soul into your home and giving him the love and security that he most surely needs. Please post a picture of him when you can. I know that we would all love to see him.

I think I would cancel the check too....let him eat it! I'm not going to pound you either...I think I would have grabbed a puppy too.....all you have to do is look in their eyes and you fall in love!

Give Charlie a kiss and hug from all of us and keep us posted on his condition and growth. He sounds like a cutie pie....can you post a picture??

I'm SOOOO happy that you have Charlie there with you now - what a happy little guy he's going to be.

I am spitting mad at the moron. I can't even speak (type). Please keep us informed how you all are doing. This is the first night of love for Charlie!

With that statement about "slapping upside the head", this man needs to be reported not only for neglect, but abuse! It is so important for puppies to be nurtured and socialized those first few weeks. I'm so glad you got Charlie home w/ you and can begin working w/ him to earn your trust. He's probably going to end up really spoiled, but he deserves it. Be patient w/ him, poor little guy has been through alot.

I've just cried after reading about the horrors that these poor pups are going through and all the "wise advise" that the ugly man was giving you, in how to treat and correct Charlie. I am so MAD!

I just can't imagine how can people be so cruel to innocent little animals. I only wish that this man is punished. Maybe I'm a bad person but I would put that man in a small little cage and would poke him with a stick -ya'll know were- :censored: for eternity.

:D Charlie's Angel! How Funny!

It's 9:12 on Saturday morning and I am getting NOTHING done because I can't stop watching and playing with and loving our newest family member. He has "flowered" overnight and is actually beginning to act like a normal puppy. We are all so very pleased with him... I have heard that these little critters capture your heart but I had no idea it would happen so quickly and so completely.

I am already ready to brag and boast. :D He slept through the entire night (granted, he was probably exhausted!). He was so quiet, in fact, that I awoke around 6:30 worried that something was wrong. I got him out of the night kennel (which is outfitted, of course, with a plush bed and a nightime toy) and took him outside and I thought he was doing his business (it's hard to tell with boys when they are too young to lift) but I was wrong. I only know this because the minute we got inside he sniffed around, found the training pad I had placed on the floor near the door, and immediately went!!!!!!!!! :!: I was dumbfounded. Here is a pup with no socialization that slept through the very first night and peed exactly where he was supposed to! A gift from God? I am convinced of it. :halo:

Have been working this morning to try to post a picture but I have switched computers and had difficulty finding the disk for the camera, etc., etc., but I think I might finally have one. It's not the best but it's pretty good. post-783-1109431529_thumb.jpg

Thanks again to everybody for your support and for the wonderful welcome I have received on this board. I am sure I will be a frequent visitor as I have never owned a Cairn and am sure will have LOTS of questions.

I will address the "kennel" (and I use this term loosely) later today when we get home and will keep everyone informed.

Somebody hand me some tissues 'cause I'm just sitting here with tears running down my cheeks.

God love ya for taking in Charlie - what an absolute doll he is! My heart was just breaking for him and for all those dogs. I'd be calling everybody and his brother - the Humane Society, the District Attorney's office, etc. and fight to get the b*****d closed down.

Charlie is so absolutely precious and you will get so much love from him. Can't wait to see pictures of him as he grows.

Bless your heart for taking Charlie!! He is an absolute doll!! He will now get the love that he so greatly deserves!! Do your best to shut that jerk down...he has no business having any contact whatsoever with any animal. Please keep us informed!

I too, am in tears...You are a wonderful, wonderful person for what you did, that little puppy will have a loving home, and I wish the same for the others as well. I just hope that someone gets there and gives that guy what he has coming to him!

Can AKC do something about it? They were there during the tsunami to shelter and care for all those homeless dogs, and there were a bunch of those... Why couldn't they send someone out to get all the pups away from that monster. Reporting I think, is the best thing to do. Please let us know what happens.

Heres a link that may be of some help

I completely understand, the same thing happened to me with Yoda. When I got to the breeder, I found that she was raising many, many different breeds, obviously not interested in the bettering of one or even just two breeds. She lived on a rural farm and kept the puppies in different stalls in barns. It was rainy and cold and Yoda was little and had a terrible cold. I could not leave him there knowing that I could make sure he got the proper medical attention. I took him straight to the vet who (after chastising me) put him on antibiotics. We did have some behavior problems with him as a puppy as a result of him not being well socialized by the breeder. I took him to puppy pre-school, and worked through it with the help of my vet. Luckily Yoda is now fine. I knew this was not a good idea (luckily my husband was in Virginia at the FBI academy and couldnt stop me) but I knew I had to rescue him. I would encourage you to read about socializing puppies and make sure he goes to obedience classes as soon as possible
