He's so humiliated!

Poor Tucker! His seborrhea isn't any better despite all of my attempts to help him. Someone on the Col. Potter list suggested using a skin care regimen that they use on rescues who come to them with very poor skin. It consisted of baths with Denorex shampoo, Gold Bond powder, cover with a baby onsie and give Benedryl. We'll do this once a week for three weeks and see how it goes. However, Tucker really didn't care for the onsie at all. I had to take it off him when we went for our walk and for him to use the potty. Well, later in the evening, he was sleeping on the bed, and I kept smelling something foul. I thought it was his gas, so I ignored it. When I got him up to take him and Scruffy out for the evening potty, I felt a lump in the onsie. He pooped his pants!! He was so embarrassed! I felt horrible for him! I cleaned him up, but he was so depressed for the rest of the night. Poor little dude! Anyway, I took some pics for you to see what a pitiful picture he made!

Thela, Did your vet try prednisone for Tucker? It did wonders for Molly. I put onesies on her to keep her warm she loves them. When I take them off she grabs them away from me and tries to get it on herself. When its real cold out I put them under her coat, ONLY after she she is done doing her business. I"m still not sure what caused her to lose her fur coat, change in diet, a flea, the wrong shampoo or whatever so i'm still afraid to give her a bath. Her last one was in Sept. and she still has no doggie smell. We had a big fight over what side of the bed who was going to get, I like the left side and so does she so I laid on my side she tried to turn me on my back to get on the left side of me, on me is fine with her too and there was no room so she tried to push me over and when I wouldn't budge she jumped off the bed and started woofing at me and wouldn't jump back up I picked her up put her back in bed so she decided to step down into her own basket (I have to post pictures of her in it.) and slept there all night. At seven the next morning she stepped back up on the bed and started scratching on my pillow for me to invite her under the covers and cuddle with me. She is a love. MG

OK guys,

I wrote in here before about Roxie losing all her hair and nobody said anything about a possible "skin condition". I have settled on her having a thyroid problem, but exactly how much and how far down did your guys lose their hair? Her hair came out in two areas along her flanks about 5 inches X 3 inches. First, all the long hair down to puppy fur underneath, and then puppy hair gone down to skin, in a matter of a week. Could it be something else? Only thing throwing this off is that it did not itch her at all.

suedelu29, can't thyroid function be tested quite easily? A complete blood panel might be informative, if your vet hasn't already run one. You might also write to the Health Related Concerns committee contact for skin conditions.

At 6 months Molly was biting all the fur she could reach from her waist down her legs. She chewed off the top coat I helped by pulling it out and the under coat fell out. She was bare bottomed for months. Finally the top coat had just about filled in by the time she was a year and a half when she started itching again and she lost it on both sides of her back and her back legs. her under coat never grew back. She now has a full outer coat only. Although the past week it seems she is shedding a bit. Not enough to get much loose fur off. MG

Hey Bradl this one's for you.

I did have Roxie tested, one basic and then into the next step one. Unfortunately my vet goes by numbers only and hers read low to normal. BUTTTT, she had every physical symptom there was, shivering cold all the time, lethagic, sleeping constantly (wouldn't even come out of her cage in the morning), she actually looked tired, the hair loss thing, 8lbs gained in less than six months, agressive, scared of the dark, wouldn't play, go up stairs, you get the pic. Anyway he wanted more and more tests, and I said let's just wait and try her on a low dose of thyroid. He wasn't happy but did so. Within a week she was her happy playful self again. Skin is turning black to pink SLOWLY and growing in a few strands of hair. Obviously we are monitoring it and the next test results I might send out for Jean at Hemopet to test. Has anyone ever heard of hear? She supposedly does test that concur with the type of pet and size of pet.

If you think it might be a skin thing please let me know.

Webstar, did you ever find out why your pet loss their fur?

Doggie Depends..................poor Tucker, but he does look cute. I had never heard of an Onsie before. I always just referred to those things as doggie diapers.

No Sue I am still wondering what could have caused Molly to lose her fur. When she was 6mo. she did get fleas from our cat, at the same time we changed her dog food and bathed her with a flea shampoo she was also spayed as all this was going on. The vet did tests on her for skin problems and came up w/ nothing. I did take her off all wheat and any foods containing food coloring. Again she was not eating her kibbles (dh gives her to much table food so she turns her nose up at kibbles.)I met a women that runs a pet store and owns a cairn that had lost its coat too. She said she put her on Wellness Whitefish w/ sweet potatoes and now has a beautiful coat. I again changed kibbles she was doing good on it when I decided to give her a bath w/ a good oatmeal shampoo that i used before so I didn't read the directions and forgot to shake it well. She started losing her coat again, I changed vets, at that time I saw no fleas on Molly. Well, outside the vets office there was a doggie restroom that we used, when the vet was checking Molly she found ONE flea on her and said that it could be that Molly is allergic to fleas. My guess was she got the flea in the rest area. (Her skin was black where she chewed on it too.)She put her on prednisone for maybe 6 weeks and said to faithfully use Frontline on Molly and Holly our cat every month. That was in Sept. so far her coat has grown in but like Roxie she is always cold. And to Mike onesies are baby under shirts and t shirts that snap at the crotch. MG

suedelu29, I have heard a lot of good reports about Dr. Jean Dodds. Good luck with Roxie. I know less than nothing, but it sure sounds like you're on a good path to me.

webstar, I would sure be more suspicious of fleas than forgetting to shake a bottle of oatmeal shampoo!

Oh Thela, I'm sorry for you having to clean up Tucker's poopie pants. I'm also sorry he was so humiliated, but he sure gave me a good laugh. He's just too darn cute in that onesie. :shy:
