After all the discussion about backs, stairs and ramps, I decided to get Gus some stairs for his 8th birthday today. My bed is pretty high, and he doesn't have much room to take a run at it. Lately he has been letting me put him up there without even a reflex growl.

Later today we went for a long hike in the Partridge Hills. Blissful freedom for Gus. He has excellent off leash behaviour (now, in his maturit), but I still put him on a long line at lunch time so I can relax. 

He seems to be at that magic age where he has settled down a lot but still has tons of crazy energy. 

Best dogs ever.

So much to attend to out in the wild! We were in a very undeveloped park and we saw no other hikers but a few mountain bikers and their dogs. Gus is on guard lest they encroach on our picnic territory.

He seems to like the stairs! 

All in all, a great birthday full of yummy treats.

Gus has some experience with these stairs, as when I take care of his mini daschund pal, an identical set comes along with him. So he started using his new set right away. 

I'm not sure whether he is using them to come down, because he always stays in bed until he hears me open the kibble container, and then rushes downstairs. I will have to try to catch him in the act!
