First shots from breeder?

Hi Everyone-

I am new here and I just recently put a deposit on a Cairn puppy after months of searching for one. She won't be ready to come home until next Wednesday. The breeder informed me from the beginning that she would have all of her first shots and a certificate from the vet. Sounded fine so far, but when I spoke to her again the other day to set up a time to pick up the puppy she mentioned that she ( the breeder) gives the puppies their first shots at her home, THEN takes them to the vet. Since this is my first time dealing with a breeder I was just curious if this is normal. Please let me know what your experiences have been. Thanks!

Yes, that is very normal. My friend breeds cairns and he always does the first shots and deworming. Make sure you get a health certificate when you pick your puppy up that you can take and show your vet. You'll have to continue w/ the puppy shots until your puppy gets rabies around 16 wks.

Also, don't forget to post a picture of your new pup. We are suckers here for new baby pictures.

When we got Scully she had her first shots which the breeder gave her and we got a chart with the labels from the bottles on it that we took to our vet for the first visit. I'd say you should be okay.

Good luck with your new pup. Any names picked out?

Hi and welcome to our little "family" :chat:

I'm getting a new Cairn pup too on the 23rd. Same thing with my breeder...shots, vet checked and worming dates. If I remember correctly, my breeder has something like 20 Cairns so to do her own vaccinations is probably more of a convienence.

I'm naming my little guy Elliott, Ely for short and I just can't wait.

Be warned however, Cairns are addicting. I have 2 girls and Eli will be the only male in my household.

The breeder I got Rebel from gave him his shots and I couldn't take him before she had the bile acid test done. I think that is what she called it. It tells about liver function and he had to be 10 weeks old before she would have it done. I got him the evening she got the results of the test. Although I had visited him and his siblings a couple of times.

Thank you all for reassuring me. I am still learning. This is actually going to be my husband's dog, so I am banned from the name picking :) I will definately post pictures once I have her home! Thanks again!

I've got a 10 spot that says hubby's dog turns into Deborahlee's job to be pooper-scooper, feeder, and potty trainer! :D:D:D:D:D

Scully'sMom..

I think you have it entirely right!!

My husband wanted a fish aquarium. We got a 29 gallon freshwater tank. I now do the feeding, cleaning, syphioning, maintainance and all the other disgusting chores and he rarely looks at "HIS" fish. (I even get nipped by some of his nasty little fish every time I clean this tank)

Our anniversary is 3 days after we're supposed to pick up our new Cairn puppy. I told him today that "Elliott" is his anniversary present. First off, it gets me off the hook of buying him a present.

Second, I will let him name "Elliott" because after he experiences a major poop incident, especially if it's enroute home in his vehicle, Elliott will all of a sudden become MY dog.

I plan it all in advance .halo:

Excuse me for laughing. :D I have to agree w/ Brad that the dog will pick. I am now the proud mom to 3 cairn girls. I was the one who put a deposit down on my oldest Kiara. My dh was not at all thrilled about the idea and stayed that way right up to my trip to the airport to pick Kiara up. Everything changed when he saw her, the dog that was suppose to be mine. Kiara is now 3 yrs old and a total daddy's girl. Sure, she loves me but she really prefers sitting w/ my dh at night.

You'll have to keep us updated about your new cairn. Scully's right, Kiara may be my dh's dog, but I'm stuck w/ the jobs of everything else.

We have a Bichon right now that is ultimately my dog. Anyone who owns one will tell you that their love tends to border on the obsessive side and she refuses to believe my husband exists. So, while I agree the puppy chooses who it loves, my husband will never speak to me again if that person turns out to be me. Which is fine because when the puppy does make a mess or needs to be fed or walked I certainly can't be the one to take care of her because she'll see me as her owner. Well, that's at least what I am going to tell him, but of course I will do it anyway. :D

Brad's right about the dog choosing. Scully is really "my" dog but she loves her daddy. She'll sleep on his stretched out legs on the recline for hours on end. Me? She's up, she's down, she wants to play ball, she wants to go potty. Of course, this is always when it's the one show I want to watch on TV!

Scout is "daddy's girl" right now, and Finch is mommy's girl. Both of them respond more to me than my husband. Maybe because I am the one that feeds, walks, and plays with them?? Scout loves to cuddle with my husband and Finch thinks she is glued to my hip! Does anyone go to the bathroom alone anymore?? :P

Alone in the bathroom? What that? :D

Scully loves to watch the water swirling in the toilet. As soon as you hit the handle - she's got the paws up and the head in, totally fascinated. I'm SO proud! :P
