Does your cairn howl?

As some of you know, I am the proud (and busy) mom to 3 cairns. My first two only barked, maybe more of a yapping sound when they were really young. My youngest who will be 16 wks next week has had this cutest little howl ever since we brought her home at 6 wks. The first time I heard it was outside in her puppy pen when she was ready to be picked up. It's hard to describe here, but she'll go, "woo, woo, woooOOOOoooooo." I notice she does this when she wants something. She does have a little bark that she uses when she see something new. I bought some new shrubs for the yard and when she saw them, she barked. I just think this howl is so cute and wondered if any other cairns howl.

My oldest does and it's hysterical. Sometimes we can make her do it by just looking at her and making certain noise. She does it most in the morning.Or els we'll intentionally pretend she's invisible and to tell us she's here she'll WooooWoooo real loud.

Yup. Grace howls when she wants something....sort of like saying "please, please, please..." a soft multi-tonal conversing her wants.... and when she wakes up she makes this cute stretching.."I am not awake yet mommy noice." A special bark for when the cat is teasing her, a "I hear a dog walking down the street" bark and play with me yip. I've never had a dog with such a large vocabulary!

Oh my do they howl. We used to have a dog-loving lettercarrier (he had bull terriers) we called the 'whistling mailman' (for the obvious reason) and he told us he loved to 'set the dogs off' as he made his rounds. At the time we had five and the oldest girl Barley would start up with a howl and the other four would join in. If we let it go on, the chorus usually included at least one dog doing what sounds for all the world like a yodel. What a racket.

Our current four do the same thing some days when they hear me unlocking the house from the garage when I come home, with Barley still band-leader.

Ours tries to talk, too. He will sit and look up at you and move his mouth.

He acts like my kid did before learning to talk.

But neither of them ever howled.

Duffy does the "woo woo argh argh" thing also. He does this when he wants a treat and when he wants to go out. I had a female Springer spaniel that made the same type sounds and would walk in a circle while making them. Duffy just sits and looks at us when "communicating".

When Jack goes on a barking spree in the house, and I scold him he starts doing this "talking" thing. It is a cross between a howl/growl/whine. I think he is trying to tell me why he HAS to bark and how much he HATES that I won't let him!

Our Pepper do that too...sometimes when he obey our command (sit, down etc) and we dont give him a treat immediately, he would do that howl/bark/whine thing while staring u in the eye like he is talking to you...so funny.

Scully does this thing where she paws at your arm, looks you in the eye and does this like she's trying to bark but the only thing you hear is her "lips flapping". It's hysterical. We ask her what she's trying to tell us and she turns her head and looks at us like "I'm talking to you, don't you understand Cairn talk?"

You know how your kids always found a reason to bug you when you were on the phone????

Well, my oldest girl, yowls and howls when I am talking on the phone! She plops right down in front of the 'special treat cabinet' and sings her heart out . Whoever I happen to be on the phone with always ask what the heck is going on with my dog!!

I am sure you have guessed by now who trained who for this one  ! As she usually gets a treat just to quiet her down so I can talk.....lol!

Whisky (six-month-old male) has his own pen in the den where he sleeps at night. Just after dawn, he makes some sort of a noise that is a cross between a howl and a yipe, which he repeats until he is paroled for a walk in the yard. The bark appears to be reserved only for when he is playing watchdog in the living room, and then it is used indiscriminately for everything from chipmunks to mail carriers. We have noticed that he sometimes neglects or misses his voluntary watchdog duties, but we attribute that to his young age and to the fact that Cairns are easily distracted.
