bradl
When we arrived at the show site in Vancouver Washington this morning and discovered the obedience rings were in the horse arena, Peggy wanted to turn around and go home - "I wouldn't have entered if I'd known we were going to be on dirt." Stella had two Novice B legs going in and Peggy didn't want to have a bad experience with Stella probably snuffling around in the dirt instead of heeling. Well good thing she toughed it out because Stella qualified for her third and titling CD leg. Her on-lead was pretty terrible - she wasn't snuffling in the dirt but she was forging a bit and didn't seem to get at first that she was "working." But by the time she got to the figure-8 she was watching Peggy instead of goofing off; her off-lead heeling was very nice and Peggy made masterful use of the allowed "second command." Her recall was, as always, hilariously fast. She placed fourth with a 182. Not a high score, but quite respectable for a terrier that had never worked on a dirt floor. I'm so proud of Stella and Peggy. CAIRNTALK: Questions? cairnsby3
Congratulations, Stella, Peggy and Brad. When I was showing Spring for her CDX, I showed her several times on grass. Other people said they would never show a terrier in obedience on grass, but I didn't think she sniffed any worse on grass than she did inside on matts. On matts they use their eyes too and every speck needs to be inspected in case its a crumb of food. In agility I don't think my dogs sniff any worse on dirt horse arenas than they do on soccer fields. If they are in a sniffing mood, stress or otherwise it doesn't matter what the surface.
