Marking When I Leave The House

George is a 4 year old cairn. I have kept him in his kennel when I go to work in the past, but I want to give him more room. I now have him gated in the hallway where he can have a bit more space. However, every time I leave the apartment...even for 5 or 10 minutes he marks (on the walls, furniture, etc). I have been firm with him, but this does not seem to be working.

Help Please!?
