Guest
I have been seriously considering this breed, but am a little concerned about whether they are too unpredictable off the leash. What I wanted to know is whether they can be trusted to not run off and get themselves lost? I have a golden retriever that won't stray more than 15 feet in any given direction and I'm hoping that the Cairns are similiar.

I would say, on average, not at all similar. CAIRNTALK: Questions? Susan
Christy, No, Cairns can NEVER be trusted off leash. They were bred to hunt vermin in rocky cairns, and the instinct runs very deep. If they see a squirrel, they're off! Well, if they see a butterfly, they're off too! lol! They're not too picky. They just like to run after a moving target. It's fun and instinctive, and no amount of yelling is going to stop them when they're "in the zone". Susan
