off the leash

I have been seriously considering this breed, but am a little concerned about whether they are too unpredictable off the leash. What I wanted to know is whether they can be trusted to not run off and get themselves lost? I have a golden retriever that won't stray more than 15 feet in any given direction and I'm hoping that the Cairns are similiar.

Christy,

No, Cairns can NEVER be trusted off leash. They were bred to hunt vermin in rocky cairns, and the instinct runs very deep. If they see a squirrel, they're off! Well, if they see a butterfly, they're off too! lol! They're not too picky. They just like to run after a moving target. It's fun and instinctive, and no amount of yelling is going to stop them when they're "in the zone".
