Weigh or measure each meal and cut back by a small amount. For example our guys get a 1/4 cup per meal. If one is looking a bit chubby we'll cut him back to a scant 1/4 cup and that's usually enough to make a difference. Or if looking thin, boost to a heaping 1/4 cup. Usually the effect will be seen in about two weeks. Amount of food needed varies by seasons, weather, age, and general activity level of the dog.

When monitoring food don't forget to include treats as portions. One method if feeding kibbles  is to measure out food in the morning and use a handful of the meal kibbles as treats during the day — no other treats.

You can also *replace* some of the measured food using a few low-sodium green beans as filler.
