Lizzie
Has anyone ever found a solution or trainer/ training method that stops incessant alert barking? My cairn would bark at a leaf falling or a car door opening in the distance and don’t get me started on aeroplanes. Nothing seems to work to control or calm this behaviour - beyond being close enough to physically stop him by muzzling him. This only really results in him waiting for the moment I let go, so he can have the last word anyway!
bradl
Generally we have had the most luck with teaching them an activity that is incompatible with barking and have them do that. For some it's little as the "look at me" game. Others are more able to multi-task. Most of our dogs wouldn't bark if put in a sit-stay. Haggis managed to rise to the challenge (so to speak) but when we escalated to putting him in a down-stay that worked long term. Sometimes just wordlessly picking them up and plunking them down in a different room is enough to change the frame. Quote CAIRNTALK: Questions?
