Spike and 'Professional Courtesy'

I noticed the other day that while Spike invariably tries to terrorize any guests or service people, uniformed or otherwise-- my drummer, the gardener, letter carrier, UPS, etc., though he barks slightly less with tradespeople he's met 30 or 40 times-- he'd been giving the local security guys a pass.

It was kind of unprecedented... we passed a patrol car, and the guard flung the door open abruptly... Spike just made eye contact with the guy briefly, and walked on.

Confused, I asked him why he wasn't barking.

He looked at me like I was a little dense.  "Professional courtesy between law enforcement professionals."
