Feel so bad for little Buffy.  Agree you don't want to bring her home before she's ready but we will all be happy once she's home and getting lots a lovin'.  You guys did real good.  Continued thoughts and prayers.

My mom was diabetic and about a year ago I decided to test myself and found some reviews on the ReliOn meter and supplies. They had positive results and were not very expensive. I purchased what I needed at a Walmart store in the pharmacy section.

Here is a Walmart online link to their products: https://www.walmart.com/search/?query=relion

I don't remember what I specifically purchased, but I do remember that you have to match the strips to the meter you buy. A pharmacist can surely help you in that respect.

Good luck and give Buffy a hug for me and Sassy.

Haven't been on here in a few days. Held my breath the whole time I was reading this topic. Praying for our sweet Buffy. Glad that she ate some chicken. My goodness you've been through a lot in a short time. Praying for you as well. Love and hugs from us.

Idaho Cairns

Good news!  Thanks for the followup on Buffy, Helene.  Our experience with our diabetic Cairn was a bit more "experimental"--the diagnosing vet suggested a minimum dosage and told us to vary up or down depending on the dog's reaction until we reached what we thought was the ideal dose.
Didn't take too long since the positive reaction was almost immediate--she was like a new dog in about a week.
Insulin (we were told to use the human variety--if there is another kind) was the least expensive prescribed medication we ever had for a dog.  Matter of fact, her prescription was down at the local Albertson's pharmacy under "Ginger Heisler"--we always got a chuckle out of that since we were sure the pharmacist thought we had a diabetic child we were treating.  Which she kinda was.
Once we got thru the squeamishness of giving shots it was all easy--didn't seem to bother the dog at all but I was always a bit of a chicken--transferring my feelings about shots to the dog.
In any case, appreciate the update and the guarded good news about Buffy--let's just believe it is all uphill from this point on!

Very helpful!  I'll definitely check this out.

okay, way to go buffy! she's going to insist you keep the chicken coming.

Not a problem.  I cook chicken regularly for Buffy and Ziggy, so it's always on hand.  Buffy will be treated like a princess when she gets home.

it will be so good to have her back. cooked chicken will be a high-protein, low fat treat that should make her feel better right quick.

Familiar food surely did the trick! How glad you will be to have her back with you. Giving the shots will not be hard to do. Once you have done it a couple of times you will be fine. We used to give our dogs all their regular shots ourselves (don't know if you can do that nowadays). I was anxious at first as I learned but pretty soon - no problem. Go Buffy!

Such good news that Buffy will be coming home. Ziggy will be glad to see his sister. Rest up Buffy soon you will be back to normal routines.

Buffy is home.  We picked her up last night and the vet said her blood sugar has come down significantly, her surgical incision is healing well and she has started showing interest in food.

This morning she took a very short walk (end of the block and back), peed and pooped, and ate a full breakfast.  We successfully gave her an insulin injection - many thanks to the vet who demonstrated it so we were entirely comfortable.  I took the day off from work so both DH and I can watch her and make sure everything is OK, plus we need to establish a more rigid feeding schedule (not something Ziggy is going to appreciate).

So far she has totally ignored Ziggy.  He came out to greet her when we returned home last night and she trotted right past him.  Poor little guy.  He doesn't understand that his sister is feeling poorly and doesn't want to be bothered with socializing right now.

A side note:  Between DH's health issues, my allergy and sinus issues and now Buffy's diabetic supplies our house is starting to look like a big hospital room.:P

Sooooo glad Buffy is home! They certainly are way happier and I think makes healing so much quicker.

Upward and onward Buffy!

Ok, you will just have to do swing beds - everybody gets to take their turn at the top of the care list. :) So happy Buffy is home - I suppose she may be a little miffed at Ziggy that he didn't have to go through that and got to stay home with you guys. -_- Just thrilled that your family is back as it should be.

post-surgery you definitely don't feel like doing anything but lay down and sleep (presumably with lots of meds). i know you feel much better with buffy back under your wing, and so glad to hear she is making a good recovery from the surgery. you're doing great.

I can commiserate with your "hospital room" comment, but just to let you know, this has become fairly common today - medically, a very different world from the one I grew up in.

Myself included, most everyone I know, with or without pets has a major supply of medical paraphernalia, prescription and over -the-counter meds, lotions, potions, etc., etc. If this is the downside of Buffy's recovery, I'm sure you'll agree that it's a small price to pay and to be shrugged off simply as part of the landscape today!

P.S. I actually installed a second medine cabinet in my bathroom for the overflow...Seriously!?
