Inflammatory Bowel Disease

Recommended Posts

Hello, all.

I recently found out that my beloved little girl, 13 and 2 mo. has Inflammatory Bowel Disease in her intestines after emergency exploratory surgery. I am nursing her back to health now from surgery (dialogue under separate thread, "Concerned About my Sweet Girl"). Once she is well enough, I am sure a treatment plan will be discussed. We are taking her to an Internal Specialist next Friday.

Please advise if anyone has experience in this area. As always, your thoughts are most appreciated.

Gina, a short course of steroids like Prednisone will calm the inflammation and swelling in the bowel and help her to feel better quite quickly, you may even see her appetite to improve.

The short tapering dose of steroids will help to avoid some of the side effects of steroids.. make sure you finish the entire course to avoid problems with adrenal issues (too low output of the hormones the glands produce). The treatment of IBS is similar to humans.  The vet may recommend some foods to avoid to prevent another flare up.

You're an amazing, caring person she is very blessed to have  wonderful parents like yourselves.

Prayers always,

Mary

Thank you so much, Mary! You really make me feel better and now, my girl is actually showing signs of an appetite. She ate a little of the prescription diet canned stew the doc asked me to purchase this morning at our visit. I am very grateful! :)

I don't have much experience with IBD but I can tell you that steroids are not the worst thing in the world.  I have to use them from time to time due to allergies and skin conditions - and Buffy has used them for allergies too.  They are wonderful for getting inflammation under control, to the point where it can be managed in other ways.  The other plus is that they aren't terribly expensive.

So happy to hear Trinity is getting her appetite back.  That's a very good sign.  Keeping you in my prayers.

Thank you so much! She is slowly getting on the road to recovery. I am still very cautious but happy to see that she is eating. We will take it one day at a time! :)
