Barking

Searching for ideas to help contain barking.  My 13 month old pup's level of barking has been increasing significantly.  Jax barks at nearly everything; things out of place in the house, any noise large or small, joggers, people who don't come greet her on walks etc.

I know cairn's bark but I'm talking about a barking frenzy at times.  We've tried verbal commands with rewards for being quiet, shaking a can of pennies to distract her, talking quietly to calm her all with little success.

Is this normal behavior and something that will decrease with time?  I'd appreciate any suggestions.

I used a spray bottle with cold water aimed at Addie's rear end with some success while saying "no bark" as soon as the water hit her.

On barking rampages, I'd pick her up and flip her on her back (basically cradling Her like a baby) and hold her until she stopped barking and struggling.

She's still vocal, but it's no longer in the realm of "oh goodness, I could get evicted."

Thanks all for the suggestions.  I tried flipping her over this morning and once I caught her (lol) that worked! Although I do that several times a week routinely to let her know I'm in charge, she doesn't like being so submissive.

I will keep the water bottle as my next trick.
