Poor little Moogie

Recently our elderly Black Lab suddenly became sick and we had to put him down.  To ease our grief, my husband went to the local rescue and adopted a mix bread Australian Cattle puppy.  At first he seemed healthy; however, about 24 hours after adopting him we noticed he had a cough...so we took him to our vet right away....yes, you guessed it he has kennel cough, and a bacterial infection and was placed on antibiotics.  About 36 hours later we notice Moogie was starting to breath hard and wheeze, fearing the worst ( as nurses often do...I was afraid she had congestive heart failure) but she to has Kennel cough.  At first the Vet recommended no antibiotics, to have her ride it out.  But then she too started having purulent nasal drainage.... so back to the vet we went, and she too in on antibiotics ....she is listless, refuses to eat, hard for her to drink because of her breathing.

It is hard to see her so sick, we were able to get her to eat a little plain hamburger today, because she has not eaten in over 24 hours, and had lost 2 lbs already...

just a word of warning when adopting from a rescue, even though he had a kennel cough vaccine, the Vet told us there are many different viruses that cause the symptoms of kennel cough, and you need a more comprehensive vaccine than most rescue will pay for before the pet is adopted.   Next pet we adopt is going straight to the vet for a comprehensive exam and vaccinations.

Moggie is getting better slowly. She lost a few pounds, now down to 14 from 17.  She still wheezes a little, but is no longer blowing bubbles from the nose..she had resumed some of her "patrol" duties in the morning, but not as long and she used to.  Our new puppy Denny is almost recovered and growing like a weed!

Both are on the mend, but it taking the old girl a little longer.  Now we just need to work on Denny's socialization skills.....;)

So glad(and relieved) to know they are on the mend, but concerned about a 3 lb weight loss on a 17 lb dog. I'm admittedly a worry-wart and wonder if it would be appropriate to check with the vet to see if nutritional, supplemental feeding might be appropriate for Moogie to help get her strength back.
