A skunk-related miracle!

Ziggy, our Shih Tzu/Silky mix is a kindly soul who, more often that not, wants to play with everyone and everything he meets.

 

This evening Ziggy was outside enjoying the cooler air. I heard him barking, went out and told him to stop. Went back inside and sat down at my computer.  Two minutes later he's barking again, more insistently.  I go back outside to bring him in but first I want to make sure he pees, so I steer him onto the lawn.  He  obliges, heads for the back door and suddenly veers off toward the fence.  Yep - it's a skunk inside the fence and Ziggy starts heading toward him, wagging his little tail like he has just found a new friend.  I yell "NO, ZIGGY!  STAY!"  and Ziggy pauses.  The skunk has his tail in the air and is ready to rumble.  He waddles a few more feet down the driveway and Ziggy follows.  "NO, ZIGGY!  STAY!" I shout again.  

 

And that's when the miracle happened.  Ziggy actually stopped in his tracks, giving me just enough time to snatch him, turn, and quickly head inside the house.  We were no more than 4-5 feet from the skunk.

 

I never dreamed Ziggy would actually listen to me under those circumstances but the little guy came through tonight.  My heart has only recently resumed its normal rhythm after that encounter.  Close one!

I've had the skunk encounter! You were lucky. At four or five feet you were both within range!

Wow! Way to go, Ziggy!  I have a friend whose dog has been sprayed twice by a skunk. Not fun! Hope Ziggy got an extra treat!

Ziggy got several extra treats and lots of scratches for his efforts!

Belle got sprayed twice in one encounter! It was even caught on video.

I think the only thing that saved Ziggy was the fact that he wasn't being aggressive, just curious.  He never barked or growled at the skunk.
