remltr
If I remember correctly in the previous forum one was able to see the date and time of the last post and the posters name without the need to sign in. That was sort of convenient if you were doing a quick fly by looking for new content without having to sign in. Is that option not available with the new forum? Thanks, Dave Edited August 23, 2013 by remltr Quote Sassy Jan 22, 2005 AM. CH. THARRBARR LITE MY FIRE ZOMERHOF
bradl
Well spotted. I changed that behavior based on this advice from the software authors regarding Best Practices for search engine optimization: Disable the "last information" on the board and forum index:Search engines prefer quality links and not redirected links, so you can remove the "last info" column that contains the member's photo, link to the member's profile and link to the latest post in the last posted in topic. Search engines are treated as guests, so they see the same things a logged-out user would see. While normally I have to hold my nose when I see, read, or say the term "SEO" -- it's the source of so much bad behavior on the web -- since we've moved I'm somewhat concerned that the loss of the excellent page rank associated with the old site, built up over years on the cairnterrier.org domain in large part due to great forum activity. New people will be much less able to find us using a google search for "cairn terriers" now that the vast google/bing index of 12 years of forum topics is now leading to broken links. Those search results will be dropped from the search indexes and we simply have to wait while the search engines rediscover, and reindex the content here. Long-winded answer. Sorry! Do you really need to log out? Is Sassy using your computer when you leave it? If you stay logged in, the forum markers will visually indicate if there are any new topics or replies on the forum. I'm open to re-enabling the last-post info if it's a real problem. Quote CAIRNTALK: Questions? Hillscreek
Once I got logged in the last time and again this time I never logged out. Just looked at new content quickly if in a hurry. Angus is not allowed to use the computer!
bradl
I never log out if I can help it (except to test guest view on something) and use 'new content' almost exclusively, but I understand that sometimes folks can't stay logged in at work, for instance, due to mischievous co-workers or other circumstances . remltr
I view the forum from three different computers depending on where I am. Each time I am done with the computer I close the browser and that automatically logs me out and clears cookies etc from all sites visited. It is a security measure of sorts for me. Anyway this is just a convenience thing for me, not life altering or anything. If you feel it is detrimental to the site to reenable it then I would just leave it alone. bradl
Your routine is sensible and secure. On reflection I doubt that any gains from the practice are likely to be significant, so reenable it I shall. I want things to be optimized for people more than machines. Quote CAIRNTALK: Questions?
