Happy Ending

Jack

Recommended Posts

On Saturday we were returning home and encountered a pair of German Shepherds trotting down the middle of a busy highway about a quarter of a mile from our home. They were causing quite a traffic problem. They eventually turned into a yard and disappeared from sight.

Sunday morning we took Jack and Belle for a long walk in the woods. At the creek, about two miles into the walk, I spotted a pair of deer about four hundred yards across a field at the tree line. I pointed them out to Jack who has become quite good with hand directions. He tore out toward them with Belle following. They never get close to deer with their short legs but the chase is good exercise. The wife and I followed. As we got closer we discovered that the deer were the pair of shepherds that we had seen the day before. All four dogs sniffed and greeted and got along well. After a while we managed to get Jack and Belle headed back toward the truck. The shepherds laid back and disappeared.

We decided to text a fellow that we know that has lived in the community all his life and see if he knew of anyone missing the shepherds. He texted back in about a half an hour that a couple that lived about two miles away in the other direction were missing a pair of shepherds. They bolted on Wednesday night when the fireworks started.

About an hour later through several calls and text we met the couple and their uncle at the trail head to try to lead them to where we had seen the dogs. They had just left church and were still in their Sunday Go To Meeting cloths. The young man said that he had cried all night the first night they were gone. The young woman said that if there was a chance to find them she was going, regardless of how she was dressed. The trail is kind of rough and woodsy.

While were discussing this the woman called to the shepherds a couple of times. I suppose they had followed our scent back up the trail...they popped right out of the woods and had a family reunion with their owners. They loaded up with tails wagging and went back to good food, rest and companionship!

The type of happy ending that makes you feel good!

Good job!  Thank heavens you found them and took the time to search out their owners.

We have found loose dogs wandering our neighborhood many times and it always makes us feel good when we can contact the owner and witness a happy reunion.  You and Jack and Belle deserve a pat on the back (and scratch behind the ears). :)
