Thin hair on face and head

I'm hoping this is normal for a 12 week old but it seems that the hair on Hamish's face and head has got thinner. He has lost most of his puppy "fluff" everywhere else and is starting to feel that the coat is becoming harsher. his face and head do have quite a bit of fluff left on them but as it disappears it doesn't seem to be being replaced yet. If I look closely I can easily see the skin underneath. Is this normal as the coat matures and the puppy coat disappears?

He did have one tiny spot of Demodex under his right eye for a little while (he was very stressed the first week at his new home) but that has cleared up and new hair is starting to cover the spot so I don't think the "thin" hair on his face and head is related. At advice/knowledge would be appreciated. We're off the vet tomorrow for 12 week shots so if it seems unusual ill get her to check him over.
