Have to share some great news... my little girl Roxy earned her CD a couple weeks ago. Two of the three legs were placements. Last fall she earned her BN. We are on our way! Now I think we will be in the rally ring until we are ready for open!

Thanks! I have one in open now, and have started utility work with him. If we can only get all the exercises right on the same day, that isn't a runthru or practice! It is never the same thing twice.

:qualify: Yay!!! Congratulations :cake: That is SUPER FANTASTIC!!!!!

Open work can be frustrating.....but it sure is fun. I wouldn't trade my obedience Cairn for all the goldens in the world!

Raise your expectations for what your Cairn can do....and try very hard to meet your Cairn's expectations of you.

"CAIRNGRATULATIONS!!!" Those of us who have not yet been trained by our Cairns to attempt such admirable feats salute you and Roxy.

CD is an obedience title earned in the Novice class, and stands for "Companion Dog" - to earn it a dog/handler team must qualify three different times with a score of over 170 each time. The scoring is based on exercises like Heel on Leash, Figure-8, Stand for Exam, Heel Free, Recall, Long Sit, and Long Down.

The AKC provides a nice overview of obedience: http://www.akc.org/e...ing_started.cfm

Even though we are not competitive, we do try to put a CD on our dogs because the relationship formed while training is priceless. The specific exercises are mostly just a framework -- a way of having a specific goal to work toward. We've found that teaching a dog almost anything *also* teaches them to learn just about anything else. Plus, it's a lot of fun for dog and for us, too, hanging out with fellow dog lovers.

I have a ton of respect for anybody who can put an Obedience title on a Cairn Terrier! You know there are easier breeds?

It is never the same thing twice.

Yup!

I have so much fun with the antics of my cairns, who would want an "easier" breed!

My male, Toby is now in Open...still looking for the Q, we will get therr. He does great in runthrus and practice, just something goes wrong in the ring..often just one thing! My guess is it is handler related... hopefully i will have good "Q" news soon!

Actually with their intelligence, I find it really easy to train Cairns...I have put 2 CD's, 1 CDX, 2 RN's, 2 RA's and 1 RE on Cairns...now I am training my puppy Pippin and he is such a fast learner. They may be rascals, but Cairns are not knuckleheads like a lot of "Obedience" dogs. I call Cairns the "Lazy obedience trainer's dog" because you don't have to have them do the same thing over and over...if your Cairn does it right once, you are done with that exercise for the day. If you make them do it again, they will more than likely turn and look at you like 'hey I did that already, not doing it again, sorry"

:qualify: Way to go Roxy!

. Got to say I agree with Peppersmom about 'knuckle head' obedience dogs. I've seen a few when I competed with my labs.long ago. And there were quite a few dogs that were great in the ring but in regular life ........not so much.

Nevertheless I did enjoy it.

The ' ring ' for Angus (7 months next week) and me right now is places like Tractor Supply and some other agricultural stores where we can walk around and meet folks and do some sits and downs by the checkout counter.

He learned all the basic stuff so quickly at home it was time to get him to do this stuff with some distractions. And there's plenty! He was nuts at first - barking, jumping and pulling, - a bit embarrassing with lots of comments about that's a lively one, eh  but a month later he's quieted down somewhat and is complemented on his sits and waits.

Getting it together in the real world is the biggest thing for me right now.

I agree the Cairns are just wicked smart and learn fast. Its just if the decide to do it (fill in any exercise here) when you want them to!

Pippin earned his first leg in Beginner Novice this weekend. This is a newer titling class and for those of you new to obedience, this is a really good way to "get your feet wet" in the sport. I had never even seen a ring like this and I found it really easy. The heeling pattern uses rally signs and it was a very simple pattern. The stays are done with only your dog in the ring and you walk all the way around the perimeter. The stand for exam is a sit for exam and you do a regular recall without the finish. You are allowed one extra praise during the heeling exercise and a second command on the recall too. This is perfectly tailored to the young dog just starting out in obedience who may not know every novice exercise,...in my case Pip doesn' t have a finish yet, so this was really nice..also a younger dog would have more trouble with group stays.,....

I sure wish there were cairn in my area. There is only one other that I know of (at least is a member of my training club). It would be so nice to have someone with the same breed (and sometimes challenges) to train with! There are a couple near Cincinnati, but that is as close as I have heard from. (sigh)
