Chewing on Shoes

Milopup

Recommended Posts

My pup is pretty stubborn about chewing on slippers. He just will not stop chewing on my mom's slippers. We have tried pulling on his collar and growling "NO!", small spanks on his butt (not hard spanks at all), and nothing works. :(

Any suggestions????

Milopup,

We had the same problem with Duffy. Slippers, shoes, socks, you name it. He would take them from the closet and hide them around the house. We finally went to a five and dime store, bought a real cheap pair of slippers, wore them for a few days to get our scent in them and then gave them to him. Now that he has his own pair to chew and tear apart, he has left ours alone. Give it a try with your little guy.

Thanks MikeC (our pups do seem similar, huh?), you always have great advice and anecdotes. That sounds like a good idea. Though I was hoping to break him of the habit, it has been really hard. Let me try this and see.

My youngest cairn, Hannah does have her own slippers but she still goes after my feet! If I'm barefoot, she leaves me alone. If anyone is wearing socks, she pounces on us. I've just been redirecting her to something else to play with.

My daughter has learned that she has to pick up her shoes & socks because Abbey will prance off with them. I've got to be more firm, but it's hard when you see the way Abbey proudly marches around w/ her treasure. Both Abbey and Hannah are young so I think they'll outgrow this. Kiara is 3 and could care less about shoes and socks. She'd rather steal everyone's toys. :D

Hi! I guess I'm pretty lucky with Riley concerning chewing - - he doesn't chew on anything but his bones or toys!! Every once in a while he will grab someone's sock but it is just a ploy to get you to play with him - - he likes to be chased while running around with a sock in his mouth. Never had to worry about leaving shoes or slippers around the house!

Scout (when she was a puppy)would always chew my DD's things. She chewed her shoes (always the new ones..sigh), and purse handles. The puppy, Finch, seems to prefer her toys or "chewies"...so far so good!

Maybe you could spray the slippers with Bitterapple? My dogs HATE the taste!

I've also been very fortuntate with my girls as far as chewing things. They have one of those dog-bone toy boxes half full with chew things. I think they have more fun getting into it and picking out something...kind of like a treasure chest.

I was really afraid to let my younger Cairn, Madison loose in the house when I wasn't home because I have a leather chair that I waited 10 years to get. I couldn't imaging what she could do to it in just an hours time  But other than a small little hole in a wool rug, there has been no destruction.

I hope I haven't jinxed myself with a new puppy coming soon.
