"Fetch"

Zoe's favorite game was getting me to kick a mini-basketball across the yard. She would herd it like a sheepdog, and then, after she'd *corralled* it, she would stand there and wait for me to walk over and kick it in the other direction. She'd hunker down real low waiting for that kick! It turned out to be good exercise for both of us!

Scully will play catch for hours. She brings you the ball and has to make you tug it several times before she'll let go. All you have to do is tell her to go get her ball (there are several!) and the look on her face as she goes around the house rounding them up is hysterical.

Calli loves to play fetch but it has taken her months to actually bring the ball BACK. She holds it and wants us to chase her for it. I refused and now she will slowly run up and then 85% drop it at my feet (the other 15% she ends up throwing it for herself). It is amazing how long we can play like that. Of course Calli's "obsession" is a 2 year-old golden lab who only wants to play with the tennis ball. Our joke is that Calli is going to have to get dressed up like a tennis ball in order to get any action!!

Sometimes Wes will run ahead into the "outfield" to catch a ball.

I recently caught him doing that during dinner. He wanted me to launch a few peas at him.

You'd think with all this fetching experience, he would bring in the paper or even bring back his dinner bowl. No. He thinks fetching only means tennis balls.

Madison is a dynamo for the frisbee. So far she hasn't been able to catch it in mid air but she tries. Today, as soon as she saw me release it she was growling and on top of the frisbee before it could reach the ground. Funny thing was I threw it kinda far and she was sitting right beside me when I tossed it. Of course then she'll either bring it back or start ripping it to shreds....depends on her mood. -_-

Hi! Riley is the best "retriever" - - - he will fetch any toy I throw and bring it back and drop it so I can throw it all over again. He will do this until one of us gives up - - - usually me!!! It is amazing!!!

My 3 yr old Kiara loves to play fetch. I can't even have my coffee in the a.m. before Kiara has her toy dropped at my feet. If I ignore her, she gets very vocal until I throw her toy for her. The other two (Abbey 10 mths & Hannah 4 1/2 mths) don't play fetch w/ me as much but love to help Kiara retrieve her toy. It's so funny to see the 3 of them holding onto a toy for dear life. Usually little Hannah lets go but Abbey will get dragged across the floor as Kiara makes her way to me w/ the toy. Once Abbey gets involved, both of them join in for a game of fetch. When I throw the toy, they try to beat eachother to it and then both of them bring it back to me. This would go on all morning if they had their way.

How did y'all teach the pups how to retrieve? My pup will go after things I throw (though if it doesn't interest him he will ignore it), but I can't get him to bring it back to me. :(

Well, after Wes runs for it, I say "bring it back, bring it back, bring it back!" After a while he caught on.

Sometimes he comes back without it, and we say, very animatedly, "Where IS it? Where IS it?" and he'll turn around and get it (well maybe on the second try.)

Giving treats might help when trying to teach 'fetch'......

We never had to think about it as both our Cairns love to play fetch!

Scout loves to play fetch too, although she likes to play it in the house, but doesn't seem too interested in playing outdoors..go figure! The puppy, Finch, will play fetch too, but doesn't bring it back alot. I never had to teach Scout to fetch, so I'm unsure how to teach the puppy. She is soooo food motivated, that I'm afraid that she wouldn't ever want to fetch the ball if she knew I had some food in my hand!
