Heroic dog honored for saving couple in coyote attack

A heroic Wire Fox Terrier was honored Tuesday for squaring off against a coyote to protect a woman and her husband from being attacked last August in Rossmoor.

Ronnie, a 9-year-old canine, received the 28th-annual National Hero Dog award from the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Los Angeles during a downtown ceremony at L.A. Live.

Event organizers said that Ronnie sprang into action when the coyote jumped over a 6-foot fence and threatened Janis and Eric Christensen, who were in their backyard. The coyote bit Ronnie in his shoulder. The dog then bit the coyote and chased the animal from the yard, organizers said.

"This shows that treating your pet with love and respect can be returned by an amazing heroic act," said Madeline Bernstein, president of the animal society
