Seminar: Cancer in DogsWestie Foundation of America Education Seminar
Thursday, October 4, 2007 – 5:30 pm
“Dealing with cancer in dogs: what cancer means to you and your Westie”
John L. Robertson VMD PhD
Director of the Center for Comparative Oncology
VA-MD Regional College of Veterinary Medicine
Virginia Tech, Blacksburg, VA
This presentation will provide a very basic and informal overview of how cancer develops, how it is detected, current methods for treatment, and some exciting prospects for controlling and eliminating it in the near future. A specific discussion of bladder cancer in Westies and other short-statured Scottish terriers (Scotties and Cairns) will be used to illustrate what owners and breeders need to consider when dealing with a dog that has cancer. The importance of breeding, diet and medical care in relation to cancer will be part of this discussion. Questions will not only be welcomed, they will be expected!
Biographical sketch for John L. Robertson
John Robertson received his veterinary degree from the University of Pennsylvania (UP) in 1976 and his doctorate in pathology from UP in 1977. After a 13-year career in the pharmaceutical industry, helping develop new drugs for people and animals, he joined the faculty at the VA-MD Regional College of Veterinary Medicine (VMRCVM). In 2002, he was named the founding Director of the Center for Comparative Oncology www.vetmed.vt.edu/CeCO/ , an academic center devoted solely to the study of cancer in animals and people. The goals of this center for translational medical research are to identify similarities and differences in the growth of tumors in all species, find new ways to detect and treat these tumors, and to seek fundamental changes in the genome that are the basis for all tumors.
John lives with his wife Susan, two dogs, twelve cats, two ducks and six geese on 27 beautiful acres in the Blue Ridge Mountains of Virginia. He recognizes that it is his purpose in life to use his energies and knowledge to fight cancer.
