Undercoat Shedding

Wagage

Recommended Posts

Our boy Henry is almost 20 weeks old and is starting to shed undercoat BADLY. If you hold him with a dark shirt on you'll be covered in fine hairs momentarily. Let me just say that he hasn't had any grooming work done (We can't find anyone in our area that has even HEARD of stripping)

What can we do to contain this undercoat shedding?

Well all dogs are going to shed to some degree. But it sounds like he's blowing his undercoat, and to help you can try brushing him several times a day with a comb or brush. If you own a stripping knife, you can rake that through the coat (this will go through the outer coat and pull out the undercoat)

When ours start to shed the undercoat I go ahead and brush/comb them over and over and it pulls it out, then you don't have to wait for it to slowly fall out all over you.

Back-combing will remove lots of undercoat. First I use a pin-brush, brushing the coat in the opposite direction that it grows. Next I do the same thing with the wide-tooth end of my metal comb, and finally again with the fine-tooth end of the metal comb. You will be amazed at how much undercoat you can get out doing this! In addition to removing undercoat, this process also invigorates the skin, and will be refreshing for your dog.
