jodi0553
Well, we've had quite a night. Currey somehow got out of the house this evening. We are very vigilant about access to doors, etc, to the point of using baby gates and doors to confine him from whatever door might be open at the time. I had a very long day at work, and for the life of me I cannot remember if he greeted me when I came home, so I can't pinpoint when he escaped. He wasn't begging for food at dinnertime, he didn't come to try to eat out of the dishwasher, and the last straw was when I noticed at 7:00ish that he hadn't eaten his meal yet. He's been more interested in keeping an eye on the chipmunks than food lately, and not doing one or two of these things is normal...but all three...no way! DH took him out after work and remembers petting him for a while and going onto the deck to upright some furniture that blew over in a storm....he may have gotten out then, but it just doesn't add up. Anyway, after we searched the whole house and yard 3 or 4 times, we walked the neighborhood stopping at each neighbor with dogs. I was yelling his name out the window and shaking a bag of treats (because of course, recall improves with the sound of the treat bag!) DH had heard some dogs barking a couple streets over from the end of our street (dead end) so we got in the car to investigate. No luck. We even drove a mile up a busy road to my office since he loves to go there. It was quite dark when we returned home and I insisted one more drive of our street, even though DH had walked one way and I the other twice...Well, he came out from the yard of a vacant house at the end of our street - the same end where DH had heard barking a half hour before. We think he may have gone on quite a trip and was on his way home. Also, he did obedience training with me and has much better recall to my voice than DH's. I am just so glad I wanted to do a third tour of our street...even in the dark! He was soaked to the bone and hopped right into the car. He immediately begged for a treat! He got home and played with all his toys like he was just the happiest boy in the world. I'm just so glad he's home!

beccadiane374
How scary...I'm afraid I would've been rather panicky! Last night must've been a night for escapes. Tanner was at my sisters last night & got out her front door, a problem I've never had at home. Luckily, there wasn't anything breakable in my hands, 'cause I dropped it all & lunged. Guess he heard the different note of panic in my voice, 'cause he just turned around & looked at me like he wasn't sure what was going on. Took awhile for my heartbeat to slow. So very glad to hear you found him & he was safe and okay! If they could write stories, I wonder what he'd say.... Becky & Tanner
Kramersmom
Oh my, glad to hear this was a happy ending. Kramer once got out my front door, I just screamed, KRAMER GOT OUT! Poor little guy just stopped, looked at me, walked over with his tale tucked and ears back. I scared the day lights out of him. He never runs or darts out but still, we just never know. The other day for the first time there was a coyote in the middle of my street. It was all wet, looked like he/she was confused as to where it was at. Luckily, we were inside, not outside and have Kramer bark at this coyote. I went to tell all my dog neighbors to be careful, some let there dogs run there property unleashed. We have coyote's on the trails/woods, but, in 11 years living here, never saw one in the streets. Rhonda,Kramer & Angel Missy "Blessed is the person who has earned the love of an old dog". Sam I Am
That is my worst nightmare... that the meter reader forgets to shut the gate. Jock has absolutely no idea about cars and roads. kintra
So glad to hear he made it home okay! Zach got lose one time, and after running down the streets calling for him, etc, I came back home to call the local vets, went back out to look for him and the little man was sitting on the porch, waiting to be let in. jodi0553
thanks all! I am just still so happy we found him. Kintra - I thought that is exactly what Currey would do. Usually when we are out for a walk, we get halfway to the end of the street and he hightails it home. When he is scared he pulls and tugs and does anything to get to our front door as soon as he can. He definitely knows where our house is, even though we've only been here for a little over a year. I have a feeling he was on his way home when we found him, but I just do not know. He was gone long enough that I did call the vet where his microchip is registered (gotta update that...he's still registered at the vet in Aloha, OR and we are 3000 miles away!) and tried the local humane society. I was really getting pretty hysterical near the end! I didn't realize how frantic I was till after we found him...when I finally had him in my arms I just sobbed! He behaved quite interestingly once we got home. He had an extra long very active play session as soon as we got in the house. Then he was the biggest lap dog ever. He's usually opposed to being a lap dog, but last night he spent a full hour with me on the couch! I don't know if he was happy to be home or just knew I needed that, but it was clear that he was not quite his normal self last night. I'm still a little embarrassed to walk down my street...we made quite a commotion last night going up and down the street and calling for him. No one was really out, as it was cold and rainy...I think that may have been the worst thing of the situation...Currey's so friendly that he would have surely gone straight to a neighbor to greet them had anyone been out and about.
